Japan Top 15 Weekly Light Novel Ranking: December 20, 2021 ~ December 26, 2021

Three posts in a row today, now that is something. Anyway, the Top 15 Light Novel sales chart for the week between December 20 to December 26 is led by the Light Novel edition of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie which began screening on December the 24th nationwide Japan. Copies sold are at a very good 18,100 copies in its first 3 days. The release of the Light Novel also coincides with the film’s initial screening day. Right after is Kokuou no Junan Delfinia Senki Gaiden Volume 4 at 17,950 copies sold within its first 6 days. The author Sunako Kayata has worked on a number of titles including Turuuku no Kaizoku while artist, Mamiya Oki is mostly known for Boys Love related titles.

The latest and 28th volume of Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu is 3rd at 14,051 copies sold in its first 3 days. The title is evidently struggling as this is its lowest 3-day sales when compared to Volumes 24, 25 and 27. Copies sold were also slightly down for Volume 26 which 4-day sales amounted to 21,350 copies while Volume 23 which had the same number of days was 7.55% higher at 23,093 copies sold. 

Likewise, Number 4’s Hidan no Aria Volume 36 is on a consistent downward trend since Volume 34. Note that from the volume onward, they all have 3 days of sales when charted. Volume 33 noted a high number of copies sold due to it having 4 days of sales. The series received an Anime adaptation ten years ago by J.C. Staff, plus a special episode in the same year. It then saw its spin-off title, Hidan no Aria AA animated in 2015 which spanned 12 episodes. The Light Novel also has a Manga adaptation of the same name that is still ongoing. Then, for horror fans, you may be interested in Number 5’s Haunted Campus: Dandan Ouchi ga Tooku Naru at 8,937 copies sold in its first 6 days. The Light Novel was adapted into a Manga series, however it was short-lived, having ended after three volumes. In 2016, it received a live-action film adaptation starring Yuuma Nakayama and Haruka Shimazaki. Skip over to Number 7 is a title you may be familiar with, Hachi-nan tte, Sore wa Nai deshou! Volume 24 at 8,289 copies sold in just 3 days. Note that copies sold are relatively stable with 5-day sales hovering roughly around 12,000 copies to 13,000 copies. The best was achieved by Volume 21 at 13,393 copies sold. Volume 20 had 7 days of sales while the low turnout for Volume 22 was due to it having only 2 days of sales.

And then, we have Genjitsu Shugi Yuusha no Oukoku Saikenki Volume 16 with 7,542 copies sold in just 2 days! Its Anime adaptation recently ended its broadcast on September 26 and a sequel was announced to commence very soon on January the 9th next year. The title made its appearance for Volume 12 at 5,392 copies in 2 days, and Volume 15 saw 5,410 copies sold in 3 days. That slight boost may actually be due to the Anime adaptation.

Gimai Seikatsu Volume 4 places 10th for the week with perhaps its best sales so far. Copies sold are at a good 6,903 in just 3 days. Note that the rest of its volumes were charted at a higher number of days with the 1st volume at 7 days of sales. Both Volumes 2 and 3 were at 4 and 5 days respectively. Gimai Seikatsu also has a Manga adaptation by artist, Yumika Kanade published in Shounen Ace Plus. You can check out the Manga’s first chapter right here in Japanese. KADOKAWA also released a promotional video of the 4th volume, so make sure to check it out below!

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear Volume 18 which places 11th for the week does great at 6,014 copies sold in its first 2 days, which is definitely its best sales performance to date since the 13th volume. Note that Volumes 13 to 17 all had 3 days of sales with the exception of Volume 14 at 6 days. Copies sold for were below 6,000 copies for past volumes while Volume 14 was at 6,836 copies sold. Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear is announced to receive a sequel to its TV Animation series, though the date of its broadcast is still unknown. The first season was adapted by EMT Squared and ran between October 7 to December 23, 2020.

Last but not least, the 5th volume Oni no Hanayome sees its pre-release at 5,428 copies sold, and the spin-off title to Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou, Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou Zero Volume 6 is at 4,917 copies in 2 days. The Light Novel has a Manga adaptation which began publication in 2018 available through Comic Gardo with several of its chapters available for read right here in Japanese for free.
