Japan Top 10 Weekly Anime Blu-ray and DVD Sales Ranking: September 19 – September 25, 2022

It is certainly the strongest performing week of the year as several big names have made their appearances. The list starts off with Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie at a total of 149,908 copies sold in its first 5 days, a spectacular turnout with total gross sales for its discs alone standing at 983,141,573 yen (≈6.82 million USD). Despite the stellar opening, the film is still much, much far behind the 1,310,783 copies sold recorded by Kimetsu no Yaiba Movie: Mugen Ressha-hen in June 2021 in its first 5 days. Nevertheless, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie is the second best-selling film in terms of debut sales in copies and gross sales to date since 2019, ranking above titles such as Tenki no Ko and Violet Evergarden Movie.

Please note that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie also comes with many other different editions such as the Animate set, Amazon set, MAPPA set etc. However, these editions tend to be tracked separately by Oricon or at times not tracked at all. As such, these are not sales at its full potential.

Coming in at Number 3 is a rather surprising performance from Lycoris Recoil Volume 1 with a huge 21,185 copies sold in its first 5 days whereas its DVD edition is 3^rd on its own list at 2,198 copies. In total, that would be a very comfortable 23,383 copies sold with gross sales for the week at 184,866,000 yen (≈1.28 million USD). As a TV Anime series, the performance showcased here is massive, whatnot it being an original Anime. And to make things even better, A-1 Pictures, the studio that produced the show is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aniplex (which is also part of the Anime’s production committee), the sole distributor of the discs. The fact that Lycoris Recoil was able to produced such a strong start would mean that even if it is able to retain most of its momentum as we have seen here, it will most likely exceed 120,000 copies sold (for its entire catalogue). Therefore, we are looking at around 1 billion yen (≈7.2 million USD) of potential gross sales, enough to fund future projects.

If you wish to compare Lycoris Recoil’s performance against other titles, note that its performance in terms of copies sold is below those of Uma Musume: Pretty Derby (TV) Season 2 Umabako The 2nd Corner [Trainer Box] which sold 150,390 copies in its first 5 days, Umayon Blu-ray BOX at 81,000 copies in its first 5 days, Symphogear XV Volume 6 [Limited Release] at 32,057 copies in its first 5 days. In terms of gross sales, it sits behind Symphogear XV Volume 6 [Limited Release] which was at 240,427,500 yen (≈1.67 million USD).

Then, at Number 4, Spy x Family makes its latest and 2^nd volume debut at 6,085 copies sold for its Blu-ray edition while its DVD edition comes in 4^th on its respective chart at 1,828 copies. In total that will be 7,913 copies sold in its first 5 days, slightly down from Volume 1’s 8,085 copies sold back in July this year. With that, the volume has noted gross sales worth 61,476,000 yen (≈426.59 thousand USD).

At Number 5 and 6 are the re-releases 5-toubun no Hanayome in compact forms with both Season 2 and Season 1 placing side by side at 4,780 copies and 4,704 copies sold respectively in their first 5 days. With a 12,000 yen (≈83.25 USD) price tag each, its gross sales for the week is at 113,808,000 yen (≈789.38 thousand USD).

As for others, we have Kingdom: Choyou Kouryakusen at Number 8, Himouto! Umaru-chan: Onii-chan, Arigatou! Blu-ray BOX at Number 9 while the 1^st volume of Tensei Kenja no Isekai Life Blu-ray is 10^th. All three failed to chart on the Blu-ray’s Top 20 general category chart while on the DVD’s list, we have Detective Conan Part 30 Volume 8 and Tokyo Mew Mew New ♡ DVD Volume 1 both making it onto the Anime chart but failed to place a spot on the general category chart.
