Kimetsu no Yaiba Movie: Mugen Ressha-hen‘s releases utterly crushes the Blu-ray and DVD charts for the week between June 14 to June 20, and that perhaps is an understatement. It has so far the best ever opening sales since I started tracking Anime Blu-ray and DVD sales (which was back in July 2019). Prior to the releases of its discs, the theatrical release has already been breaking records here and there, including surpassing 40,016,942,050 yen (about US$367.6 million) worth of tickets sold in Japan, the first ever film to do so, plus being the second highest-earning Anime film ever in the U.S. box office (Source: ANN).
Both versions of its Blu-rays and DVDs top the chart, placing in 1st and 2nd with total Blu-ray copies sold amounting to 689,342 copies. Its DVDs on the other recorded slightly lower sales, but stayed close to its Blu-ray performance at 621,441 copies. Putting its total sales at a massive 1,310,783 copies according to Oricon. Note that this is not inclusive of the ufotable’s Limited Edition release. Despite its overwhelming sales, we have to admit that 2021 has been a great year for Anime Blu-ray and DVD sales.

When put side by side with 2020’s best performers, Mugen Ressha-hen is still far ahead of titles such as Frozen II and Tenki no Ko. Note that Makoto Shinkai’s Kimi no Na wa.‘s first week sales back in 2017 stood at roughly 422,000 copies sold for its Blu-rays whereas its DVDs saw 216,000 copies sold (Source: Crunchyroll). If we look at in terms of its total Blu-ray and DVD sales, Mugen Ressha-hen has sold nearly four times the amount Frozen II had in its first week (minus Frozen II 4K UHD Steelbook since sales data is not available, but it should sell less than 1,500 copies at the time).

It will be hard to say if we will see any other titles coming close to Mugen Ressha-hen this year as Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie is only set to be released on December the 24th. Its discs are most likely to arrive somewhere in June of 2022. Do expect to see Mugen Ressha-hen to continue being on the charts for some weeks to come.

Several new releases for the week include 5-toubun no Hanayome‘s Volume 4 which settles in at number 4 with 3,246 copies sold. Although it experienced a small drop from Volume 3’s 3,365 copies, sales maintained above 3,000 copies sold mark with Volume 1 remaining its weakest performer thus far. The numbers look a lot better when put together with sales of its DVDs, a total of 3,872 copies sold was recorded.

SSSS.Dynazenon‘s Volume 1 reported decent sales as both Regular and Special Editions sold a total of 3,018 copies for the week. A spot down, you will find Tokyo Revengers‘s 1st volume. Even though its Blu-rays seem to have failed to impress, sales of its DVDs managed to bring it closer to 3,000 copies sold allowing it to close the week with a sigh of relief. Osomatsu-san 3rd Season‘s Volume 7 that comes in at 7th for the week seeing a total of 1,719 copies sold for both of its Blu-rays and DVDs. Show by Rock!! Stars!! and Futari wa Precure: Max Heart Soushuu-hen – Arigatou & Aishiteru 2021 Edition at number 8 and 10 welcomed their first weeks with poor sales, the two sold 958 copies and 485 copies respectively for the week.
