TSUTAYA and COMIC ZIN Weekly Tankoubon Sales Ranking via Natalie: August 16, 2021 to August 22, 2021

It has been a while since we last set our eyes on a list that is not dominated by one series, and the week between August 16 to August 22 has present us with nearly a whole new set of cast led by Aka Akasaka’s Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen Volume 23. The author’s other work can also be found at Number 6 with the 5th volume of Oshi no Ko, and speaking of the title, it was recently announced today that the Manga has just won first place in the “Next Manga Awards 2021“. Serialization began for Oshi no Ko in 2020 through Shueisha’s Shuukan Young Jump, with up to 51 chapters released to date, although official English releases are not available as of yet, some chapters are accessible (in Japanese) right here. Sales did not start strong for the first two volumes, however their presence is made known with the release of Volume 3 and Volume 4 which had strong debut sales in February and May of 2021. Copies sold were at a good 52,701 copies for Volume 3 in its first week, but the number climbed debut-to-debut to 94,157 copies for Volume 4. With the Manga gaining popularity in its home market, it is quite safe to assume that sales will breach the 100,000 copies mark for Volume 5.

As for Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen, sales fluctuate considerably on its first weeks, yet sales maintained above 100,000 copies sold for its past eight volumes, peaking at 161,263 copies sold for Volume 20. The series was adapted into Anime back in 2019 by studio A-1 Pictures, and a sequel was released in 2020. A third season and an OVA (released in May 2021) was announced in October 2020, though no confirmation as to when broadcasting for the the third season will begin is made known (source: ANN).

It is thanks to the amazing folks over at Natalie.mu that we get to see these charts on a weekly basis, so be sure to head over to their site here and show them lots of love! Plus, all the data you find below is accessible right here via Natalie.mu. Also, be sure to visit sites TSUTAYA and COMIC ZIN by clicking on their names below as these lists would have not been made possible if not for them.

Following Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen closely at Number 2 is Taiyou Kuzumi’s Uma Musume Cinderella Gray Volume 4, a spin-off title of the Uma Musume project. Like Oshi no Ko, it too started out slow to only show up on the Top 30 Oricon chart with Volume 3 in May of 2021 with 93,287 copies sold in its first week. Blue Lock which is gaining traction domestically places 3rd with its 15th volume. Not to forget, that it too will receive an Anime adaptation set to air in 2020 by studio 8bit. Do check out the freshly released teaser promotional video down below. Sales were rough for the title prior to Volume 13 and 14 as it could not make a consistent appearance on Oricon’s Top 30 charts. The title appeared twice in 2020, the first for its 8th volume with 39,713 copies sold in its first week and 52,868 copies sold for Volume 10 in its debut week. Volume 13 and Volume 14 on the other hand, sold 68,107 copies and 79,726 copies respectively in March and May of 2021.

At Number 4 is a title that you would want to pay attention to. After a long time of absence, Black Lagoon Volume 12 finally hits shelves to place 4th for the week on TSUTAYA’s chart. Note that, it last made its appearance back in 2018, with sales of Volume 11 hitting 194,161 copies in its first week. Volume 10 was listed in 2014 with 210,335 copies sold while Volume 9 at 251,187 copies in 2009, good gosh. That is nearly four years in between. It is still unknown when the next volume would be released as the Mangaka was reportedly dealing with depression (source: ANN). Lets pray the best for the author.

Coming in at Number 5 is Enen no Shouboutai Volume 30. Debut sales for the series slumped from a peak of 94,758 copies for Volume 27 to 54,572 copies for Volume 28, but sales recover for the latter volume on Week 2 seeing 61,199 copies sold. The Manga does seem to be comfortable at a range between 110,000 copies to 115,000 copies as of Week 2, therefore a weak turnout on Week 1 will most likely see a recovery on Week 2.

Then, we have Diamond no Ace Act II Volume 28 and Kanojo, Okarishimasu Volume 22 placing 7th and 8th respectively. Diamond no Ace Act II has not been seeing strong debut sales as of late with both Volume 26 and Volume 27 selling under 60,000 copies in their first weeks. Numbers have climbed up the week after to settle for more than 60,000 copies, putting the two-week sales for the two at 119,224 copies and 119,889 copies respectively. Kanojo, Okarishimasu is in the same boat. Sales have plummeted debut-to-debut from the highs of Volume 16 to Volume 19 which saw sales above 70,000 copies with Volume 18 recording the highest debut sales of 85,768 copies. Despite the weak turnout for Volume 20 and Volume 21 in their first weeks, copies sold pushed through into their 2nd week with 49,532 copies and 30,591 copies sold respectively.

At Number 9 is Akatsuki no Yona Volume 36. Sales were doing well for Volume 32 and Volume 33 in April and August of last year to see copies sold at 81,731 copies and 78,573 copies respectively, but since then, it was not successfully listed on Oricon Top 30 until Volume 35 in April 2021. Volume 35 at the time performed splendidly to see a combined sales of 104,548 copies for both Regular and Special Edition of its volumes. Competition is quite stiff for the week, it is quite possible that sales would revert back to the levels seen for Volume 32 and Volume 33.

Interestingly, COMIC ZIN chart features nearly an identical list to TSUTAYA, which is quite uncommon, though the ranks are different. Here, Black Lagoon leads the charge, and following right after is Kanojo mo Kanojo Volume 7. Kanojo mo Kanojo currently has its Anime ongoing with seven episodes in. Sales were lackluster prior to the broadcast, but has since seen a glimmer of hope as Volume 6 did well enough to see 33,477 copies sold in its first week, allowing it to rank at the 18th place on Oricon chart back in June of 2021. Kodansha USA has five of its volumes made digitally available, plus the 1st volume has its Chapter 1 available for free (in English) right here, so do check it out!

Emi Fukasaku’s Onigiri-san no Sentaku Volume 4 is 3rd. The preview for the 4-koma Manga can be accessed right here (in Japanese) for those who are interested. The author has also worked on a number of titles, including those of recent ones are Goodbye Pumpkin and Happy Bird. Tonikaku Kawaii Volume 17 can be found at Number 6 for the week. The title unfortunately could not see its volumes pass the 40,000 mark sold for the ones that made through onto Oricon’s weekly sales charts although it has received an Anime adaptation. Volume 11 and Volumes 13 to 15 were all left out of the Top 30, as such it will be quite hard for it to rank on Oricon’s chart for the week if it does not have sales at around 40,000 copies sold. If competition, especially with Tokyo Revengers is not as strong, then we may see it able to chart. It remains to be seen if the recently released OVA would have an impact on sales, yet if it does, that would be most welcomed.

Finally, two other new titles belong to Uri wo Yaburu Volume 3 by Azusa Itakura and the final volume of Ponkotsu-chan Kenshouchuu by Tsubasa Fukuchi at Number 8 and 9 respectively.
