Japan Top Weekly Manga Ranking: May 17, 2021 ~ May 23, 2021

What an exciting week this is! All Top 17 are made up of new releases with Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen‘s 22nd volume taking home the crown at 146,590 copies. Debut sales for its 22nd volume mark an improvement over Volume 21 which had 120,724 copies sold in its first week. Volume 20 is still the best performer among the latest eight volumes at 161,263 copies sold. Let’s not forget, the series is also expected to receive an Anime adaptation for its 3rd season on an unannounced date. So, look forward to that!

It is thanks to the amazing folks over at Oricon that we get to see these charts on a weekly basis, so be sure to head over to their site here and show them some love! Plus, all the data you see below is accessible via Oricon right here (Manga) and here (Series).

Aka Akasaka nails it again with yet another of his work appearing on the chart, at number 2! Side by side with Kaguya-sama. Not to mention, it came in with improved sales over its previous volume which sold 52,701 copies in its first week. Volume 4 on the other hand, debuted at 94,157 copies.

A couple of titles you may want to look out for in the Top 10 would be Blue Lock, Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. and Blue Period which occupy spots 5, 7 and 9 respectively. Blue Lock recently won the Best Shounen Manga category at The 45th Kodansha Manga Award. Both Komi-san and Blue Period are set to receive an Anime adaptation in the same season, which would be this coming Fall 2021. Komi-san‘s Volume 21 did better than sales of Volume 20 in its debut week, but the Anime announcement could not boost sales enough to reach the level seen with its 15th and 16th volumes. Perhaps that will change when broadcasting begins. Seven Arcs will be the studio responsible for the Blue Period Anime series. I have left the promotional video below for those who are interested.

A number of titles which have had their Anime adaptation such as: Kyokou Suiri, Maou-jou Oyasumi and Runway de Waratte are on the chart whereas Edens Zero is airing now. Go over to number 14 is a fairly fresh new series, Aoshima-kun wa Ijiwaru at 40,470 copies sold. This is a work by Yuu Yoshii who is also working on another title called Ready, Go! One other newcomer on the chart is Kouji Seo’s Megami no Café Terrace. The Mangaka previous works include titles such as Fuuka and Kimi no Iru Machi.
