Asahi Broadcasting Group Holdings Corporation’s content business saw a decline in operating income by 45.69% to 1,575 million yen (≈11.59 million USD) in the third quarter of FY2023, despite an increase in sales. The group earned 53,822 million yen (≈396.20 million USD) in revenue, which is slightly lower than the 53,318 million yen (≈392.49 million USD) it earned in the same quarter the previous year. Rising expenses were the main cause of the drag, leading to an overall lower profit of 1,307 million yen (≈9.62 million USD), down by 53.57% from the same period the previous year.
One of its anime-related entities, ABC FRONTIER, experienced a loss of 48 million yen (≈353.34 thousand USD) in operating income in the latest quarter, even though net sales increased by 0.78% to 1,156 million yen (≈8.51 million USD). During the period from April 1 to December 31, 2022, it was involved as a production committee member in two Anime productions, Kaijin Kaihatsu-bu no Kuroitsu-san and Saikin Yatotta Maid ga Ayashii, produced by studios Quad and SILVER LINK. and Blade, respectively. Both anime have finished airing with revenue for Kaijin Kaihatsu-bu no Kuroitsu-san may have only been for the last episode.
Another subsidiary, ABC Animation, saw its operating income decline to 129 million yen (≈949.61 thousand USD) in the third quarter from the same period the previous year. Similar to ABC FRONTIER, it also noted an increase in net sales of 11.54% to 1,566 million yen (≈11.53 million USD). From April 1 to December 31, 2022, it was involved in seven projects as a member of the production committee. One of these projects was done by a sister company, SILVER LINK., for Saikin Yatotta Maid ga Ayashii, and another one is the popular TV anime series, Lycoris Recoil. In the third quarter, ABC Animation was involved in two projects: Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai! Double and 4-nin wa Sorezore Uso wo Tsuku.
SILVER LINK.’s situation worsened in the latest quarter from a loss of 158 million yen (≈1.16 million USD) in the second quarter to a loss of 296 million yen (≈2.18 million USD). The subsidiary mainly handles video production, and sales could be from the receipts it received for Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha: Shijou Saikyou no Maou no Shiso, Tensei shite Shison-tachi no Gakkou e Kayou II, and Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. 2, which is currently airing for the Winter 2023 season.
In terms of expectations for the final quarter, ABC FRONTIER may not rebound from the loss it incurred in the latest quarter since no new projects have been announced under its portfolio. However, the same cannot be said for ABC Animation and SILVER LINK., which have many projects in the pipeline. As long as operating expenses remain under control, the two subsidiaries are likely to see improving operating income. If some of the titles for SILVER LINK. do not happen in the Spring 2023 period, it may have to wait a little longer to recover.
