Asahi Broadcasting Group Holdings Corporation latest first quarter report for FY2023 has revealed a not so encouraging performance for its Anime-related entities with all three companies under its belt reporting a loss for the quarter that took place between April 1 and June 30 this year. ABC FRONTIER, which was split off from ABC Animation in FY2022 noted a drop of 6.47% in sales for the quarter and a plunge into the red with an operating loss of 6 million yen (≈44.98 thousand USD). Note that the reduction of sales is understandable as it was a production committee member of only one show, Kaijin Kaihatsu-bu no Kuroitsu-san that was broadcasted from January 9 to April 3, and after that, it did not see any other Anime in its portfolio until June the 30th. Sales should improve for the second quarter as Saikin Yatotta Maid ga Ayashii, a TV Anime series that it is a production committee member off will be aired in that quarter.
As for ABC Animation, sales have increased for the quarter amid more shows that it was airing, for instance Delicious Party♡Precure is still ongoing as of the time of writing and Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san aired between April 10 and July 10. Sales went up 9.09% to 451 million yen (≈3.38 million USD), but it slipped into an operating loss of 30 million yen (≈224.91 thousand USD). Nevertheless, for the second quarter, it does have more shows that it is a part of (as a committee member) that have the potential to drive up sales further and bring it out of the loss such as Lycoris Recoil, Engage Kiss and Saikin Yatotta Maid ga Ayashii.
Though, SILVER LINK. which the group consolidated as a wholly owned subsidiary in the third quarter of FY2021 is in a more precarious situation. Sales have increased 246.67% to 260 million yen (≈1.95 million USD) thanks to more production works such as Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru and Saikin Yatotta Maid ga Ayashii which it is producing (the latter together with studio Blade), unfortunately, its operating loss has only widened by 15.22% from 117 million yen (≈877.20 thousand USD) the same quarter the year before to 138 million yen (≈1.03 million USD).
Nevertheless, things may improve for the studio as a filing on August 8 saw it entering into a business partnership with Zero G Act, a company that develops miscellaneous Anime character goods with the hope of maximising returns via content-related goods. As such, Asahi Broadcasting Group Holdings Corporation will acquire the remaining shares held which would make Zero G Act a wholly owned subsidiary of the group.
All in all, its Content Business saw sales up by 1.42% to 16,237 million yen (≈121 million USD), however it made an operating loss of 236 million yen (≈1.77 million USD) with the group citing increasing operating expenses brought upon higher production cost while the improvement in sales is mainly driven by a growing number of content production orders for the period.
