TSUTAYA and COMIC ZIN Weekly Tankoubon Sales Ranking via Natalie: August 30, 2021 to September 5, 2021

To think that we have reached a point where we would see One Piece releasing its 100th volume is a cause for celebration indeed. The series is ranked 1st on TSUTAYA’s weekly chart as it leads the Top 10 chart ahead of other notable titles such as Kaijuu 8-gou and Natsume Yuujinchou, which is expected since copies sold tend to be extremely high for One Piece, almost consistently above 1 million in its first weeks. Sales have however been rough for the title since the release of Volume 93 as subsequent releases could not repeat sales of the volume seeing their four-week sales dipping to around 1.5 million and 1.7 million copies sold. Nevertheless, we can expect Volume 100 to sell better in terms of debut sales given how big One Piece is, and that it has achieved its 100th volume milestone. A “Vol. 100 / Ep. 1000 Celebration Movies” was released through One Piece‘s official Youtube channel to celebrate the event with a music video performed by RADWIMPS. If you have missed it, do check it out down below!

Kaijuu 8-gou which comes in 2nd is not one to be ignored either. Volume 1 already had a great start when it noted debut sales worth 90,831 copies and Week 2 saw sales did not let up to see a total of 69,404 copies sold at the time. Sales catapulted to 301,425 copies, up 69.87% for its 2nd volume in its first week with strong sales still recorded on Week 2. Volume 3 made its appearance with another growth, though it was somewhat narrowed to only 5.50%. Yet, Week 2 allowed total copies sold to pass the 500,000 copies mark for Volume 3. It was recently announced that it became the fastest Shounen Jump+ title to hit 4 million copies in circulation (Source: ANN), and sales are expected to not slow down. If all goes well, it may grow stronger for Volume 4. Shueisha recently released a promotional video for the 4th volume to commemorate its release. Do check it out below!

At Number 3 is Ao Ashi‘s 25th volume. Debut sales for the title has been on a downward trend after reaching a high of 81,031 copies sold for Volume 18. Sales have not gone over 70,000 copies since Volume 21. The Anime adaptation which is set to begin in Spring of 2022 may serve as a boost to the series’ overall performance, though we may not see it come into effect this year. Expect a similar outcome to its prior three volumes. Interestingly, its spin-off title, Ao Ashi: Brotherfoot Volume 1 which began its publication back in July 12 is on the list at Number 5. Sales will have to be at least 30,000 to 40,000 copies above for it to have a chance to be on Oricon’s Top 30 chart, and it does seem highly plausible that it would do just that.

Look Back at Number 4 is a title worked on by someone you may be familiar with, a one-shot by Tatsuki Fujimoto who did Chainsaw Man. If you would like to read it, fret not! It is in fact available for free, and in English! Do head over here via Manga Plus to read it.

Moving to Number 6 and 7, you will find Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Volume 15 and Natsume Yuujinchou Volume 27. Debut sales for Boruto has been on a steady decline since Volume 11’s release, and Volume 14 remains the worst performer amongst its latest five volumes. Natsume Yuujinchou on the other hand witnessed better debut-to-debut sales as Volume 26 climbed 40.65% to achieve 132,742 copies sold in its first week over Volume 25’s 78,784 copies.

Number 8 features another new release, Fuuto Tantei Volume 11. It last made its appearance with Volume 10 on Oricon Top 30 sales chart with 49,808 copies sold. Starting in July 2022, an Anime adaptation is announced to commence with Studio Kai at the helm of the project.

Dragon’s Summer – Kuro to Watashi no Natsuyasumi Volume 1 places 8th with its debut volume. Its author, Hajime Yamamura is quite the veteran and has published a slew of titles. Two new releases, the 2nd volumes of Boku yori Medatsu na Ryuugakusei and Witch Watch place 9th and 10th respectively. Both titles’ first three chapters are viewable (in Japanese) via Shounen Jump+ right here for Boku yori Medatsu na Ryuugakusei while Witch Watch is available here. So do check them out!
