A rather interesting two months we get to see for May and June 2021 as Manga and Anime continue to perform extremely well in their home market. This is something that I have never covered before, but I guess I should from now on. Unfortunately, I did not track sales since the start of the year, and this is quite the bummer. The month of May saw the release of Uma Musume: Pretty Derby (TV) Season 2‘s Blu-ray with its first volume debuting a massive 112,030 copies sold in its first week. Sales went in strong for the series allowing it to accumulate 1,394.3 million yen worth of revenue (~$12,678,579). Coming in close at 2nd place is Tokyo Revengers led by its latest volume. Total revenue for the series stood at 1,365.9 million yen (~$12,418,557) for that month. The Anime broadcasting is still ongoing with studio LIDENFILMS at the helm of the project. The series has experienced intense growth weeks after the broadcast, and sales are not letting up their momentum at all. At number 3 is Jujutsu Kaisen reporting 1,130.1 million yen (~$10,260,297) for the the month as sales of its 15th volume leads the charge. Despite releasing the first week of March, sales were still strong in May seeing a total of 117,447 copies sold between May 3 to May 23.

It is no surprise to see Kimetsu no Yaiba Movie: Mugen Ressha-hen placing first for the month of June as the release of its Blu-rays and DVDs are perhaps one of the best we have ever seen so far the past few years. Released back in October 2020, the theatrical film did not just break record in its local market, but abroad as well. It stayed at number 1 for 12 continuous weeks in the box office in Japan selling 28,966,806 tickets as of May 23, and as of June the 6th, it became the first film to have earned more than 40 billion yen worth of ticket revenue in Japan (source: ANN). Sales of its Blu-rays and DVDs have so far reached 1,494,636 copies as of July the 4th, and as a series the title has recorded 9,096.2 million yen (~$82,534,407) in sales for the month of June.

June 2021 continues its impressive run with the release of Uma Musume: Pretty Derby (TV) Season 2‘s 2nd volume released between June 21 to June 27 with 150,390 copies sold. Although the number is higher than Volume 1’s 112,030 in its first week, sales slowed down to 8,736 for Volume 2 on Week 2. Volume 1 and Volume 2 have amassed 346,446 copies of disc sales as of July the the 4th. As such, as a series, it managed to bring home 2,415.1 million yen (~$21,917,894) worth of sales for the month.

At number 3 is Jujutsu Kaisen with 1,618.8 million yen (~$14,693,855) in revenue supported mostly by the release of Volume 16 between May 31 to June 6. The volume saw a record breaking 1,165,681 copies sold in its first week, up 2.31% from Volume 15’s 1,138,798 copies. Though with the recent announcement of Mangaka Gege Akutami’s hiatus (Source: ANN), it remains to be seen when subsequent volumes will be releasing this year. For now, do look forward to its theatrical release this coming December the 24th.
