Top Sales According to Series for the Month of September 2021

Tokyo Revengers sees another strong month as it rakes in 2,134.5 million yen (~19 million USD) in sales for the month of September, led by the release of its 24th volume. The volume saw unprecedented sales for the title after number of copies sold catapulted to 435,466 copies, a jump over Volume 23’s 222,469 copies sold by 48.91%, and it did so in just three days of sales. Total sales peaked for the series in July when it hit 3,026.9 million yen (~27 million USD) but has retreated thereafter as it slowly heads toward the maturity stage. Nonetheless, it has made 7,426.3 million (~67 million USD) in sales from July 2021 to September 2021 alone, which is very impressive!

Anyway, it is thanks to the wonderful people over at Oricon that we get to see these charts on a monthly basis, so be sure to check out their website here and shower them with lots of love! Plus, all the data you find below is accessible via Oricon right here.

One Piece places 2nd at 1,246.9 million yen (~11 million USD) made for the month of September. Number of copies sold were on a decline as noted from Volume 93 to Volume 96, but is still going strong for the title. 1 month sales were at the its highest for Volume 93 which accumulated 1,923,919 copies sold, but the series has not been able to capture similar performance ever since, hovering approximately 1.6 million copies sold. Volume 93 also went on to rank for 7 weeks on the Oricon chart, passing the 2 million mark, while Volume 97 to Volume 99 could not do the same due to strong competition brought upon by titles such as: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Jujutsu Kaisen and Tokyo Revengers. Nevertheless, its popularity remains steady in Japan, a sudden and major shift (for instance a significant drop) is not expected to happen.

Finally, quite the surprising addition, at Number 3 is Kaijuu 8-gou with 413.8 million yen (~4 million USD) made for the month. The series started out slow with the release of its 1st volume which saw 90,831 copies sold in its first week (not taken into account the number of days). However, it was still an astounding figure given it being a new title. Volume 1 went on to sell 69,404 copies on Week 2, but could not see itself ranked in the weeks after. Volume 2 on the other hand went on for 5 weeks to see copies sold reaching 555,135 copies! Although Volume 3 failed to repeat the number of appearances made by Volume 2, its four-week sales at the time recorded a record breaking 635,850 copies sold. Volume 4 breaks the record yet again to see 638,094 copies sold! A remarkable feat for a new series.

  1. Does Oricon publish a monthly list for best selling manga based on number of volumes sold and not total revenue? Because I think it will also prove to be very informative.

    1. Oricon does publish best selling Manga based on the number of volumes sold, but it is only available on their Yuutaiju platform where information therein is not allowed to be shared elsewhere 😅
