Top Manga Sold in the US: January 2021

It has been a while since the blog last covered Top Manga sold in the United States, last was for the month of November 2020. Some of the data hardly comes by as consistent as before. Thus, the lack of coverage. Hopefully, once we are out of the COVID-19 situation, we will get data on a monthly basis. Besides! The data you find below is all accessible via ICv2 right here and Publishers Weekly here. So, be sure to check them out! You can also subscribe to their services by clicking on the links here here (ICv2) and here (Publishers Weekly) for more complete data. Note that I am not affiliated with any of the two. I am only leaving the links for those interested.

Nevertheless, both ICv2 and Publishers Weekly cover the same period for the month of January 2021. Therefore, the lists would be identical, only that ICv2’s chart does not disclose the number of copies sold, while Publishers Weekly does. My Hero Academia‘s latest English release, Volume 26 tops the ICv2 chart. The title is as heavily nested as ever, despite the intense competition by big titles such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Kimetsu no Yaiba. Eight of its volumes are charted on ICv2’s Top 20 chart for the month. Only two titles from Jujutsu Kaisen made onto the list with Volume 1 and Volume 0 occupying spots number 2 and 5 respectively. Kimetsu no Yaiba has three of its volumes on the chart with Volume 1 trailing The Promised Neverland closely at number 4.

In terms of copies sold, My Hero Academia sold 28,006 copies for the month of January, leading the chart by a big amount. In contrast, at number 2, Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Volume 1 sold 13,803 copies, nearly half the amount posted by My Hero Academia’s Volume 26. However, this is the first volume we are talking, which is still good news for the title. We can expect larger sales when a new volume is released for Jujutsu Kaisen. At number 3, sales of The Promised Neverland‘s Volume 1 are still powering through with 11,303 copies sold, so as the first volume of Kimetsu no Yaiba which ranked 4th for the month at 10,697 copies sold.

    1. You are right… it is amazing to see how well Anime is able to promote these Manga. They were unknown to me before this, but… now they’re everywhere.

    1. Hahaha it certainly crushed the box office didn’t it? 😂 I haven’t seen it myself as well. Maybe I’ll wait for the Blu-ray. Also, I am excited to see how many copies it will sell.

      1. Hizo bastante dinero..

      2. Well… the author, she certainly did make a lot money out of it. But, as you said, the Manga has ended, I think some of the attention is being drawn over to Jujutsu Kaisen. So, Gege Akutami will be the new golden goose… I guess? 😅😅😅 But, Shueisha has a lot of popular titles, ONE PIECE, My Hero Academia, Spy x Family… etc. A lot of golden geese if I may say so myself. 😁

      3. That would be a difficult question to answer as most studios keep mum on the exact amount they spend on a given episode. Even most financial reports available cover operating cost as a whole. 😞 But according to an article in 2015, it averages around $2 million.

You can read more here: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2015-08-13/anime-insiders-share-how-much-producing-a-season-costs/.91536

I am not sure if the amount has increased though…

    1. Right! So, there were many factors contributing to the success of Kimetsu no Yaiba and the Anime certainly played a major or the biggest role. Plus, the word of mouth you mentioned. With Anime and Manga becoming more accessible, more people can get their hands on it, hence the sudden rise in sales.

      2. Well… that would be the case. Studios would have to earn more than $2 million for each cour at least. But, this is just a general estimate. The amount spend could be less or more depending on studios 😦😦😩
