It was certainly a livelier month for April 2022 when compared to the month of March seeing more new releases making onto the chart between April 3 and April 30. Note that the period tracked by ICv2 and Publishers Weekly are identical, and as such, the two lists are essentially the same. The first Top 9 titles, I will be discussing below in the Publishers Weekly section. For ICv2’s list, I would like to draw your attention to Number 18’s Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun Volume 13 which was released on April the 26th and sold 12,112 copies in its first 5 days, which is also its year-to-date total as of April the 30th. If you scrutinise ICv2’s list further, you will also notice more Spy x Family volumes than before. The title sees a total of six of its volumes taking place on the chart, the most it has ever had, signalling a rise in demand for its volumes in the US market.
A million thanks to those amazing folks over at ICv2 and Publishers Weekly that we get to see these charts on a monthly basis so be sure to head over to their sites here (ICv2) and here (Publishers Weekly) and show them tonnes of love! Top 20 Manga Sold in the U.S. by ICv2
(April 3 – April 30)
In terms of units sold, Chainsaw Man Volume 10 is the best-selling title for the month at 65,657 copies in its first 26 days which is perhaps its strongest performance to date. Note that Volumes 9, 12 and 13 all had 26 days when they appeared in their respective monthly sales charts, but none of them hit anywhere close to Volume 10’s performance. In fact, copies sold have a strong indication of a continuous rise, for instance, the 26-day sales for Volume 4 started out rather small compared to its latter volumes at 29,175 copies sold, which then grew 24.97% to 38,883 copies sold for Volume 7. The performance got even better for Volume 8 which jumped a further 17.02% to 46,860 copies, and finally a 28.63% improvement debut-to-debut for Volume 10. We also have to remember that in 2021, the US market was hit by supply chain issues, which had negatively impacted sales of Manga at the time.
Right behind at Number 2 is Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 15 at 46,498 copies sold, also in its first 26 days. Unlike Chainsaw Man, this is not Jujutsu Kaisen’s best outcome thus far for it would be its 11th volume which may have recorded the best sales since Volume 9, accumulating 50,145 copies sold in just 19 days. However, if we compare the performance of Volume 15 to other volumes with 26 days of sales, it is by far the best among recent volumes. Look at Volumes 9, 12 and 13 where the first two volumes had copies sold below the 30,000 mark whereas Volume 13 was at 40,955 copies sold.
Then, we have got Spy x Family Volume 7 taking the 3rd spot at 37,518 copies sold in its first 26 days, its best performance to date considering its short number of days of sales. For instance, the 33-day sales of Volume 5 only netted it 18,653 copies sold back in June 2021 whereas the 26-day sales of Volume 6 only saw 15,802 copies sold in October 2021. The title’s 1st and 2nd volumes are also on the Top 9 with the first at Number 4 with 31,444 copies sold, and the latter at Number 7 with 22,882 copies sold. The Anime adaptation of the Manga is clearly giving a boost to the sales of its Manga in the US.
The other new release on the Top 9 chart belongs to Kaiju No. 8 Volume 2 at 23,793 copies sold in its first 26 days. Note that the volume opened with 14,606 copies sold in its first 5 days, 27.04% more than Volume 1 in December 2021. Without further ado, the full list is as follows:
