This is a follow up report to: Toei Animation Q2 FY2022 Report: Record Sales from Asia as Overseas Film and Licensing Shine
Toei Animation has recorded its best sales for the third quarter hitting 42,522 million yen (≈367.54 million USD) between April 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021 mainly due to increasing sales of its video distribution rights in Japan and overseas, plus games and commercialization rights that are doing very well in the overseas market. The overseas market was also noted to have expanded and has accounted for 63% of its total sales for the quarter. As such, its operating income grew 14.19% from the same quarter of the previous year to 10,050 million yen (≈86.88 million USD).
Disc Sales Continue to Disappoint, Overseas Film Flattens, Great Sales from TV Animation
Sales for Movies and Discs have decreased from quarter three of the year before as a result of a reactionary decline for some works. This includes a slow down in production revenue from titles such as Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Eternal Movie and the weakening sales of Blu-rays and DVDs for One Piece Movie: Stampede. Nevertheless, the increase in the number of broadcasts has seen great improvement in TV Animation sales of 34.78% from the same quarter the prior year to see 2,550 million yen (≈22.05 million USD) in revenue. Sales for Overseas Film are nearly unchanged from the quarter of last year to see only a minute 0.68% increase to 10,087 million yen (≈87.21 million USD) amid a decline in sales from Saudi Arabia while video distribution rights in Asia performed well.
Sales continued to decline for Domestic Licensing as a result of the slowdown of Dragon Ball game rights, however commercial rights for One Piece was noted to have performed well. The segment retreated 9.19% from the quarter of last year to see 8,769 million yen (≈75.81 million USD) in sales. Overseas Licensing continues to impress, noting a significant increase in sales over the period of last year by 25.26% thanks to strong sales of commercialization rights for series such as Dragon Ball, One Piece and Digimon Adventure, plus positive sales of game rights for Dragon Ball and One Piece.
The continuous improvement in the Overseas market sees it surpassing the Domestic market for the second consecutive year (it did so for fiscal year 2021) albeit a small improvement in the Domestic market from the quarter of last year. The United States alone accounts for 33.8% of the entire Overseas market whereas Asia is 50.9% as video distribution rights have been strong in the region, in addition to the growing of new distribution rights in South East Asia. Latin America noted an increase in sales whereas Europe declined from the same quarter of last year.
Dragon Ball Slows, One Piece Getting Better
As for titles, the Dragon Ball and One Piece series remain Toei Animation powerhouses as the two continue to dominate sales for the company. That said, Dragon Ball is noticeably slowing down as a result of a weaker momentum it faced over the same period the year before. Dragon Ball leads Domestic Licensing at 3,890 million yen (≈33.64 million USD) in revenue while One Piece noted an increase of 5.52% over the prior year as it places 2nd at 2,735 million yen (≈23.65 million USD). As for Overseas Film, the positions for the two are reversed with One Piece taking the top spot with 3,436 million yen (≈29.71 million USD) in revenue, up 22.18% from quarter three of fiscal year 2021. Pretty Cure which comes 3rd continues its upward trajectory recording its best sales so far since quarter three of fiscal year 2018. Overseas Licensing sees yet another improvement for One Piece, but the improvement is larger for Dragon Ball as it retains its top spot at 7,148 million yen (≈61.81 million USD), a 17.74% jump in sales.
When put all together, Dragon Ball’s strongest performance is for its Overseas Licensing while One Piece is for its Overseas Film. There is a clear downtrend for Dragon Ball since fiscal year 2020 for the same period as sales have been on a decline for two consecutive quarters. One Piece on the other hand, noted its best performance since fiscal year 2018, an improvement of 22.73% from the same period last year to 9,104 million yen (≈78.73 million USD).
Future Development
There are a couple of new developments to note of before the fiscal year comes to an end.
