Toei Animation Q1 Report for Fiscal Year 2022: A Stronger One Piece, but Dragon Ball is as Formidable as Ever

This is a follow up report to Dragon Ball Remains Toei Animation’s Most Successful Series as of Fiscal Year 2021.

Toei Animation has noted a 3.88% increase in net sales over Quarter 1 of last year to 13,187 million yen (~115 million USD), and a slight dip of operating income to 3,048 million yen (~26.7 million USD) as it recorded its third highest 1st Quarter performance in history. Merchandising and Game Development rights were amongst its best performing segments for the quarter, offsetting the reactionary decline in sales of theatrical movies.

Its overall Film segment contracted by 15.95% from the same quarter the year before, falling to 4,312 million yen (~37.7 million USD) from the 5,130 million yen (~44.9 million USD) it achieved for Fiscal Year 2021. According to Toei Animation, this is caused by a reactionary decline in sales of Movies, DVDs and Overseas Film segments. For instance, sales of DVDs noticed a 32% drop in sales as a result of fewer copies sold for Blu-rays and DVDs of One Piece: Stampede while a reduction in sales from theatrical screening rights from Dragon Ball Super: Broly in North America and titles in Saudi Arabia were cited for the fall in Overseas Film. The diminishing production revenue from several of its movies such as Sailor Moon Eternal was noted to be one of the main contributors for the sharp decline in Movies’ sales causing it to plunge 91.24% from Quarter 1 of last year to 24 million yen (~209.9 thousand USD).

Its Licensing Business continues to be fruitful as it noted a modest climb of 17.57% from Quarter 1 last year to 8,491 million yen (~74.3 million USD) with Overseas still leading the charge at 5,269 million yen (~46.1 million USD). This is thanks to the strong sales of Merchandising rights from titles such as Dragon Ball, One Piece and Digimon, and Game Development rights for Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk.

Quarter 1 Results According to Titles

As for respective titles, Dragon Ball and One Piece still remain Toei Animation’s top earners as the two continue to dominate the Domestic and Overseas licensing segments, plus the Overseas Film segment. Both titles experienced a drop in sales for Overseas Film from 716 million yen (~6.3 million USD) to 594 million yen (~5.2 million USD) for One Piece, and 988 million yen (~8.6 million USD) to 425 million yen (~3.7 million USD) for Dragon Ball. This however, has allowed One Piece to surpass Dragon Ball in Overseas Film sales for Quarter 1 of Fiscal Year 2022.

Dragon Ball also noticed a drop in Domestic licensing revenue while One Piece has recorded a climb from 821 million yen (~7.2 million USD) it generated for Fiscal Year 2021 to 1,059 million yen (~9.3 million USD) for Fiscal Year 2022, its best so far since Quarter 1 of Fiscal Year 2018. Pretty Cure on the other hand, continued to post a decline in sales after reaching 209 million yen (~1.8 million USD) in sales for Quarter 1 of Fiscal Year 2019.

Sales remain to be extremely healthy for Dragon Ball in the Overseas market as it recorded its best sales since Quarter 1 of Fiscal Year 2018. Sales are up by 29.67% from Quarter 1 the year before to 2,632 million yen (~23 million USD). One Piece has also registered better sales after rising a decent 22.66% to 785 million yen (~6.9 million USD) for the quarter while Slam Dunk maintains its 3rd position at 605 million yen (~5.3 million USD).

    1. Well, I think that is because the movie set in February, and the report takes into account April to June of 2021. I guess after the screening ended, revenue must have dropped as a result 😅
