Oricon’s Yearly Manga Sales Ranking 2022

Remember! That it is thanks to Oricon that we get to see these charts on a yearly basis, so be sure to say your thanks by visiting their site here. All the information you see below is accessible via Oricon right here (Series) and here (Individuals). For previous years’ charts, you can read them here (2019), here (for 2020) and here (for 2021). Please note that Oricon only tracks physical copies sold in Japan.

Before diving into the charts, let us take a look at some additional stats concerning titles that made it onto the series list. From 2015 to 2022, the Manga series charts were heavily dominated by Shueisha, whose titles have made the most appearances thus far. The publisher has made 59 appearances on Oricon’s Top 10 series charts accounting up to 73.8% of the total with Kodansha trailing quite far behind at 19 appearances, 23.8% of the total. Shogakukan on the other hand, has only made two appearances (refer to Chart 1 and Chart 2).

When it comes to genres and themes (note that all of the titles have more than one), action has made the greatest number of appearances at 44, 32.6% of the total, comedy at 22, 16.3% of the total while fantasy and drama both have had 15 appearances, each at 11.1% of the total (refer to Chart 1 and Chart 2). As for themes, battle Manga is the most popular at 45 appearances taking up 28.3% of the total with supernatural coming right behind at 26 appearances, 16.4% of the total and powers settles for 3rd with 25 appearances at 15.75% of the total (refer to Chart 1 and Chart 2).

Note. The genres and themes were taken from criteria set by official publishers: Viz Media, Kodansha etc. There are few titles that did not possess a theme, as such, it is sourced from sites such as MyAnimeList or Anilist. Some themes like isekai for instance, tend to not be listed oddly enough, for instance Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken only has fantasy noted as its genre by Kodansha Comics.

When it comes to demographics, Shounen titles are the most popular of the bunch, occupying 77.5% of all series that have appeared in the Top 10 from 2015 to 2022. Seinen is next at 21.3%, then Josei is 1.3% (refer to Chart).

Manga Series Sales Ranking (Top 5)

(November 22, 2021 to November 20, 2022)

1. Jujutsu Kaisen
by Gege Akutami
Publisher: Shueisha
Estimated number of copies: 12,282,260
Graph:
Here

Analysis

Copies sold have increased by 83.24% from the 6,702,736 copies it made back in 2020 but have fallen by 60.27% against the 30,917,746 copies it sold in 2021 where in the two previous years, the impact the Anime adaptation had on the Manga was at its strongest. Note that the Anime was broadcast from October 2020 to March 2021, and the result for 2020 occurred slightly after the Anime aired. All in all, from 2020 to 2022, Jujutsu Kaisen has sold 49,912,634 copies according to Oricon.

2. Tokyo Revengers
by Ken Wakui
Publisher: Kodansha
Estimated number of copies: 11,048,067

Analysis

Tokyo Revengers was also in the Top 10 best-selling series the year before at 24,981,486 copies, and like Jujutsu Kaisen, received a tremendous amount of boost in sales thanks to the adaptation of its Anime that aired from April to September 2021. Its performance, however, calmed down for the year 2022 by 55.77% from 2021 to 11,048,067 copies as it reached maturity. That said, this would put the total amount of copies sold for the series from 2021 to 2022 at 36,026,589. Seeing that the Manga has already come to an end, it will be quite hard for the series to make a return the year after as it will only be welcoming two new volumes.

3. Spy x Family
by Tatsuya Endou
Publisher: Shueisha
Estimated number of copies: 10,600,571

Additional Comments

Note that Oricon began to limit the yearly lists from 2020 onward and the series did not make it onto the Top 5 in 2020 and 2021.

4. One Piece
by Eiichiro Oda
Publisher: Shueisha
Estimated number of copies: 10,364,102

Analysis

One Piece was on the Top 5 consistently from the year 2015 to 2020, but it faced intense competition with the likes of Jujutsu Kaisen and Kimetsu no Yaiba that jettisoned it out of the Top 5 in 2021. Due to its encouraging performance in 2022, it has made a return, though not in its best form. The series did even better in 2015 to sell 14,102,521 copies with its performance staying above the 10,000,000 mark until 2017. From 2018 to 2021, copies sold were below the amount. Despite selling less than it did from 2015 to 2017, the figure still puts it ahead of its performances from 2018 to 2021, making this its best performance within the last five years.

5. Boku no Hero Academia
by Kouhei Horikoshi
Publisher: Shueisha
Estimated number of copies: 5,353,782

Analysis

Boku no Hero Academia’s performance is down by 23.74% from the 7,020,361 copies it sold the year before where copies sold were at its highest. It did not make it onto the Top 5 list in 2020 but has made a frequent appearance on the Top 10 since 2016.
