Oricon Inc.’s Earnings are Looking Sharp in 2020

Net Income has risen to an all time high for Oricon Inc. despite fall in Ordinary Profit year-on-year to 860,089,000 yen (~$7,855,303). Although the positive outcome is most welcome, Oricon Inc. is cautious amid a surge of Corona infection cases globally, and the company expresses its concern with regards to the business’s outlook going forward caused by new Coronavirus variants which may slow down the global economy.

Oricon Inc.’s business is comprised of mainly three segments which are: Communication Business, Data Service Business and Mobile Business. As of Fiscal Year ending March 31, 2021, its Communication Business remains its largest earner, amounting to 75.8% of its total segment profit for the year 2020 while its Mobile Business is its 2nd biggest.

Sales of its Communication Business has seen a steady growth since 2015 as it records 2,777,088,000 yen (~$25,358,007) for the year 2020. As such, its segment profit rises to 1,606,224,000 yen (~$14,666,672). Its news platform the ‘ORICON NEWS‘ which it is famously known for is part of this segment. The increase in profit for this segment is attributable to the rise in the number of page views from January to March 2021. Oricon Inc. has seen the number of page views jumping 23% from the same period the year before bringing more advertising revenue. Its official Youtube channel has seen a growth of subscriber count, and as of the month of March 2021 the number grew to 1.27 million (currently the number of subscribers is 1.37 million). Its Data Service Business which involves what many of you are familiar with, sales data of music software, video software and books from its Yuutaiju and ORICON BiZ Online platforms have also recorded better sales year-on-year. In the year 2020, Oricon Inc. has generated 666,031,000 yen (~$6,081,495) worth of sales through this segment, an increase of 1.87% over previous year. Segment profit jumps 12.71% to 247,701,000 yen (~$2,262,047), its highest since 2015.

Its Mobile Business is not looking so good due to shrinking market and intensified competition. Sales have decreased 11.6% from previous year to 586,924,000 yen (~$5,359,889) while profit slumps 18.4% to 264,853,000 yen (~$2,418,318). Oricon Inc. is providing music and book distribution services through this segment.

Oricon Inc. is incorporated in Japan with its head office located in Minato-ku. It is 34.10% owned by Littlepond Inc. and is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under ticket symbol: 4800.
