Japan Top Weekly Video Game Ranking: June 5 – June 11, 2023 (Updated)

The hardware sales for almost all consoles, particularly the newer ones, have recorded a significant rise in sales. The Xbox Series, in particular, witnessed a whopping 2,679.27% jump in units sold, increasing from 328 units to a total of 9,116 units. This surge allowed it to capture a larger market share for the week at 5.7%. It is worth noting that this significant increase could be attributed to the release of the Diablo IV game, which saw an Xbox Series X bundled with it being sold at a price of 65,978 yen (≈470 USD) during the week.

Despite this, both the Switch consoles and PlayStation 5 continue to maintain a strong presence. The Switch crossed the 100,000 units sold mark, accounting for 65.7% of the market share. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 5 showed a 23.62% improvement compared to the previous week’s results, with 43,609 units sold, representing 27.4% of the market share. On the other hand, sales of the PlayStation 4 and New 2DS LL declined by 11.22% and 16.28% respectively, reaching 1,852 units and 36 units.

Diablo IV console editions made a strong start with their physical sales in the first six days in Japan, with all three versions ranking in the Top 10 list. The PlayStation 5 edition, in particular, surpassed the others and secured the second-best spot with 24,375 copies sold. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X editions were positioned next to each other, with the former selling 8,940 copies and the latter not far behind with 8,524 copies. In total, that amounts to 41,839 copies sold. According to a press release by Activision Blizzard on June 13, 2023, the game became the fastest-selling Blizzard Entertainment title of all time, reaching USD 666 million in sales within just five days. The article also mentioned that “If Diablo IV were a movie, it would have had the biggest launch week of 2023.”

Activision Blizzard also shared some other interesting statistics, as quoted from the official article:

  • 276 billion total monsters killed since launch
  • 317 million player deaths (…time to git gud)
  • 276 million total hours played since early access (that’s more than 30,000 years, or enough time to watch everything on YouTube with 13,500 years to spare)
  • More 166 million player parties created (party on!)
  • 5.8 million total deaths servedby The Butcher
  • 430,000 players killed in PvP battle
  • No. 1 on Twitch from early access on June 1 through June 9, breaking previous Blizzard records for hours streamed and watched over a similar period
