Japan Top Weekly Video Game Ranking: February 27 – March 5, 2023

Hardware sales were up overall for the week, with strong showings for the PlayStation 5 and Switch consoles. The PlayStation 5 sold 78,412 units, which was 14.52% more than the previous week. The Switch maintained its second-place position, selling 66,525 units, which was 8.38% higher than the previous week’s sales of 61,384 units. Together, these two consoles occupied 53.2% and 45.1% of the market share, respectively.

The Xbox Series consoles also saw an increase in sales, with 848 units sold, representing a 16.64% increase from the previous week. The PlayStation 4 also sold well, with a 0.55% increase to 1,655 units. However, the New 2DS LL saw a decrease in sales, with only 66 units sold, down 8.33% from the previous week.

The software sales chart for the week featured three new releases in the top 10, including Koei Tecmo Games’ action RPG Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. The game’s PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 editions debuted at Number 2 and 4, respectively, with a total of 47,831 copies sold in their first few days. Developed by Team Ninja, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty features fast-paced combat and an immersive story that transports players to a mystical world of martial arts and ancient Chinese mythology.

Another new entry on the chart was Rune Factory 3 Special, which sold 16,627 copies in its first few days and debuted at number 5. The game offers players a charming mix of farming simulation and dungeon-crawling RPG gameplay, with new features like Newlywed Mode and fully-voiced picture stories narrated by the game’s characters.

Rounding out the top 10 was the remastered edition of Metroid Prime, a game originally released in 2002. The remastered version sold 7,960 copies in its first few days of which more information about the title can be learned via its launch trailer below.
