Japan Top Weekly Video Game Ranking: August 22 – August 28, 2022

Hardware sales make for an impressive week with units sold nearly up across the board for all consoles with the exceptions of Switch Lite and New 2DS LL. Switch sees a massive 113,530 units sold within the week, a 94.41% increase, mainly driven by sales of its OLED Edition. The PlayStation 5 consoles are not looking too shabby either. The Vanilla Edition climbed 48.05% week-on-week to pass the 20,000 mark while its Digital Edition sold 2.3 times more than what it did the week before. Together, the two consoles sold 25,109 units. Likewise, the rising momentum is also felt by the Xbox Series as both editions jump week-on-week with Series X making the biggest gains of the two. Units sold in total are at 16,726 units. PlayStation 4 increases to 15 units sold from prior week’s 13, and New 2DS LL slips by 14.47% to 130 units.

Well… the software sales chart is certainly an interesting one. When was the last time we saw a Top 10 nearly dominated by new titles? Not to mention, a list that is nearly dominated by PlayStation titles. The week sees four new releases with Earth Defense Force 6’s PlayStation 4 edition leading the pack at 68,341 copies sold. Head three spots below and you will find its PlayStation 5 edition selling a further 24,363 copies, making its total units sold for the week at 92,704 copies in its first 5 days. The game, and as the name suggests, is the sixth instalment to the Earth Defense Force series and serves as a direct sequel to Earth Defense Force 5 (Source: Wikia). In Earth Defense Force 6, Earth is still recovering from its previous invasion, but has to face a new threat from a likely separate alien species. Next, is SD Gundam Battle Alliance at 38,634 copies sold for its Switch edition while its PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 edition sold 17,950 copies and 9,625 copies respectively. In total, that would be 66,209 copies in its first 4 days. In the game, you will play as a character that will be assisting a programmer, Juno who discovered anomalies within the Gundam universe which force units from different universes into battle (Source: Wikia). Because these anomalies can alter the universe’s history, as a member of the GR Corps, you will have to stop them from happening and uncover the real mastermind behind the new virus. Atlus’ Soul Hackers 2 takes the 3^rd spot with its PlayStation 4 edition to sell 31,604 copies whereas its PlayStation 5 edition makes its debut at Number 5 at 20,257 copies sold. Together, that will be 51,861 copies sold in its first 4 days. The title is the direct sequel to Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers that was initially released in 1997 with both being a part of the Devil Summoner series. In the game, you will play as agents Ringo and Figure as they stop the world from coming to an end (Source: Wikia). Finally, we have Saints Row at Number 9 with 10,013 copies sold for its PlayStation 4 edition in its first 6 days. The game is a full series reboot of the Saints Row series (Source: Wikia). You can watch its gameplay trailer down below for more information about the game.
