Japan Top Weekly Video Game Ranking: April 17 – April 23, 2023

Overall, hardware sales in Japan remained mixed, similar to the previous week, with the Nintendo Switch maintaining the largest market share at 54.5%. The total units sold for the console increased by 6.17% to reach 51,805 units, compared to 48,794 units previously. On the other hand, the PlayStation 5 experienced a decline of 11.24%, selling 41,755 units as opposed to 47,040 units, accounting for 44.0% of the total market share. This brings its cumulative sales so far to 3,371,033 units, and it is expected to reach the 3.4 million mark in the following week. The Xbox Series saw a significant increase of 64.86% in sales, primarily driven by strong rebound in sales for the Series X variant. As a result, it sold 488 units, up from 296 units at the end of the week. Sales for the PlayStation 4 dropped by 41.81% to 789 units, while the New 2DS LL experienced a 20.18% increase, selling 137 units.

The week witnessed the inclusion of two new releases in the Top 10 rankings. The first is Minecraft Legends, which sold 13,490 copies within its first five days of release for the Switch edition. This real-time strategy game is also available on other platforms, including Windows, Xbox, and PlayStation. Another noteworthy entry is Cuphead, ranking at Number 8 with 4,085 copies sold in its first four days. It is a ported version of the 2017 game specifically designed for the Switch.
