Japan Top Weekly Manga Sales Ranking: August 1 – August 7, 2022

One Piece comes back stronger with the release of its 103rd volume sitting atop of the list at 1,275,743 copies sold in its first 4 days, a minor improvement over Volume 98’s 1,237,929 copies sold in its first 4 days by 3.05%, but 7.43% lower than Volume 93. Despite the short days of sales, Volume 103 was also able to perform a lot better than the 5-day sales and 7-day sales of Volumes 97 and 102. The latest outcome is certainly much welcome considering the decline trajectory it was heading that was observed from Volumes 100 to 102. The One Piece series has been serialized in the Weekly Shounen Jump magazine since July of 1997, and it recently hit another publication record of 416,566,000 copies in circulation with 410 million copies have been circulated in Japan whereas the remaining 100 million plus has been circulated outside of the country (Source: Natalie) making it the most published comic series by a single author in the world. You can obtain more information about the work via its official website right here and read some of its Manga chapters for free in Japanese here. The title is also available in six different languages on Manga Plus, so be sure to check it out! A short video was recently uploaded to celebrate the release of Volume 103 of which you can check out below.

That said, the One Piece series did not stop at just the main storyline’s latest volume, the series performance continues to show its prowess with the releases of its other spin-off titles that did considerably well on the week’s chart. One Piece: Episode A Volumes 1 and 2 are both present on the Top 30 with very encouraging 70,034 copies and 67,213 copies sold in their first 4 days. Likewise, at Number 10, Shokugeki no Sanji starts out strong with copies sold as high as 62,027 copies sold, also in its first 4 days. You can read One Piece: Episode A’s first chapter for free right here in Japanese whereas Shokugeki no Sanji can be found right here.

Sales of Jujutsu Kaisen Manga continues to slow as physical copies reported a clear drop of sales for Volume 20 at a total of 853,877 copies sold in its first 4 days including sales of its Special Edition. In terms of copies sold alone, the volume performs nearly 8 times and 5 times better than Volumes 6 and 11, but these are the volumes that were released before the start of its Anime. By inspecting the sales of Volume 15 which was released after its Anime, its 4-day performance is 25.02% higher than Volume 20. The latest volume is also far from the sales of Volume 16 in its first 3 days and is only a small improvement over Volume 18 in its first 2 days. While the Special Edition may close the gap in terms of sales in yen against some of its volumes as it is priced 6 times more than the Regular Editions, however, it may not work well against Volume 19 since it too had a Special Edition released which sold 122,004 copies. Jujutsu Kaisen is currently being serialized in the Weekly Shounen Jump magazine by Shueisha with more than 70 million copies in circulation including digital (Source: AnimeAnime). You can get more information about the title by visiting its official web page right here and its first chapter is available for reading for free in Japanese here. It is also available in five different languages on Manga Plus. In 2020, studio MAPPA adapted the work into a 24-episode TV Anime series and in December 2021, its prequel title, Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Tokyo Toritsu Jujutsu Koutou Senmon Gakkou was adapted into a film by the same studio. A follow up season will appear in 2023, however, the exact dates of its broadcast is still unknown.

It is not just One Piece that came back stronger, Dragon Ball Super too has produced a similar result at Number 3 with 117,191 copies sold in its first 4 days for Volume 19. The two titles exhibiting this much improvement in sales must be due to the releases of their theatrical films: One Piece Film: Red and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero which have had a very positive outcome as well on Toei Animation first quarter result of the year. Copies sold for the latest volume of Dragon Ball Super have outpaced the sales of Volumes 13 and 16 in their first 6 days and 5 days and sold only 1.75% less than the 5-day sales of Volume 11. A very welcoming turnout. The Dragon Ball Super series is the sequel title to the 1984 hit Manga, Dragon Ball and is currently being serialized in the V-Jump magazine by Shueisha with some of its chapters available for reading right here in Japanese for free. The series is also up on Manga Plus in two different languages: English and Spanish, so be sure to check it out! Between July 2015 and 2018, the work was adapted into a TV Anime series by Toei Animation.

Dandadan Volume 6 makes its debut at 69,814 copies sold in its first 4 days, a much better outcome than the sales of Volumes 1 and 3 in their first 5 days and 3 days, but not as good as Volume 4 which would have sold more had it gone a day longer. You can find the work by Yukinobu Tatsu serialized in the Shounen Jump+ magazine of which some of its chapters can be read for free right here in Japanese and on Manga Plus it is available in three different languages including English. The title has more than 1.2 million copies in circulation including digital (Source: Yahoo). Shueisha released a very interesting video in August 2021 which features an interview with the author himself, discussing about the Manga, “Monsters clashing with monsters, I thought that would be really cool and nice,” as he said at one point in the video, so be sure to watch it down below.

Ao no Hako continues to perform well, this time, Volume 6 takes the 9th spot with 62,209 copies sold in its first 4 days, which is evidently better than sales of Volumes 4 and 5 in their first 3 days. Note that the two aforementioned volumes had an average per day sales of 14,311 copies and 13,553 copies sold each, as such, they would have sold fewer copies on the 4th day since the average tends to slow down the longer it goes. With more than 1.3 million copies in circulation according to its latest volume cover, the Manga can be found in the Weekly Shounen Jump magazine by Shueisha with more information about it can be obtained through its official web page here. You can read the first Manga chapter in Japanese for free right here while its English and Spanish versions can be read on Manga Plus here. In July, Shueisha released three new videos to promote the work with the first one titled “Sorezore no Natsu” or “Their respective summers” of which you can watch below. The other two videos are made specifically for the main characters Chinatsu and Hina, so do check them all out!

It is thanks to the amazing folks over at Oricon that we get to see these charts on a weekly basis, so be sure to head over to their site here and show them lots of love! In addition, all the data you find below is accessible via Oricon right here (Manga) and here (Series). If Google charts are what you prefer, you can find their respective links to the charts at the bottom of the post. Many of the titles that you see below have been discussed in the TSUTAYA’s sales chart for the same week, so do have a look at it right here. Some titles that did not make it onto the Top 30 chart were also discussed in the COMIC ZIN’s chart here.

Grand Blue Volume 19 is 11th on the list with copies sold at 56,418 in its first 3 day, which is a good turnout, but when compared to its past volumes, it is not as promising. Copies sold are less than Volumes 6, 8 and 9, 11 and 13 to 16, all in their first 3 days. Copies sold for Volume 19 are expected to pick up the following week if all goes well. Grand Blue is being serialized in Kodansha’s good! Afternoon magazine with more information about the work can be obtained here via its official web page. The first few chapters of the Manga can be read for free right here in Japanese whereas the preview for Volume 1 can be found here in English through Kodansha Comics. In March this year, Kodansha announced that the series has reached 7 million copies in circulation. In 2018, the title was adapted into a 12-episode TV Anime series by Zero-G and a live-action film was released in 2020 starring Ryo Ryusei and Yuki Yoda.

At Number 12, you will find Sakamoto Days continuing to grow as its latest performance hit another record in sales at 52,793 copies sold in its first 4 days which is a 108.20% improvement over Volume 4’s 25,357 copies sold back in November 2021. Sakamoto Days is a series by author Yuuto Suzuki that has been serializing in the Weekly Shounen Jump magazine since November 2020 with more than 1.7 million copies in circulation according to a post via its official Twitter account. Some of its chapters can be read for free in Japanese right here while on Manga Plus, it is available in four different languages. On August 3, a short video was uploaded by Shuiesha to promote the latest volume of which you can watch below.

The Fable: The Second Contact is next with its latest performance remaining flat when compared to its previous three volumes. Note that all of its sales in the graph you see below are in their first 3 days. Volume 4 makes its debut at 51,018 copies sold in its first 3 days, up by 56.40% and 13.52% over Volumes 1 and 2, however it is 0.20% down from Volume 3. The Fable: The Second Contact serves as the sequel title to the 2014 Manga series, The Fable and is serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine with some of its chapters available for free in Japanese right here. Kodansha Comics is releasing its official English volumes of the prequel title digitally with the 1st volume’s preview can be found here, so do check it out!

Kinnikuman is next at Number 14 with its 79th volume at 48,925 copies sold in its first 4 days with the only direct comparison we have is against Volume 71 that sold 16.05% more in its first 4 days. That said, its latest performance shows that it is an improvement over Volumes 74 and 75. Kinnikuman is certainly one of the longest running series out there, having been serialized since May 1979 via ShuuPlay News with more information about the title can be found here through its official web page. In 1983, Toei Animation adapted the work into a 137-episode TV Anime series. As of July 2021, the series has surpassed 77 million copies in circulation (Source: Renote).

Kekkai Sensen: Back 2 Back ends its serialization with its final and 10th volume at Number 15 for the week with 48,473 copies sold in its first 4 days, unable to repeat the success of its past volumes. Copies sold are slightly down from Volumes 8 and 9 in their first 3 days, but a huge gap in sales can be observed between the 3-day sales of Volume 2 and its latest volume. Kekkai Sensen: Back 2 Back is the follow up title of the 2009 Manga series, Kekkai Sensen that is being serialized in Jump SQ.19 magazine with more information about it can be obtained via its official web page right here. The prequel title was adapted into a 12-episode TV Anime series in 2015 by studio Bones.

Yuukoku no Moriarty comes in at Number 17 with 43,230 copies sold for its 18th volume with copies sold looking rather stable against its past volumes. But, had it gone a day longer, it may not have sold as much as Volume 13 seeing the average sales per day produced by Volume 18 is only a small improvement over the aforementioned volume. Yuukoku no Moriarty is serialized in Jump SQ. by Shueisha with more information about it can be found here through its official web page. By clicking on the 第1話 tab there, you can read its first chapter in Japanese for free. In October 2020, the series was adapted into a TV Anime series with the second cour happening in April the year after. It recently received a 2-episode OVA in April this year. As of its latest volume, the series has passed 6 million copies in circulation.

Getsuyoubi no Tawawa Volume 5 is 18th on the list with copies sold at 38,037 in its first week, slightly less than expectation. The series is serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine with some of its chapters are available for reading right here in Japanese for free. Pine Jam adapted the work into an Anime series in 2016 with a sequel then broadcasted in September of 2021. As of its latest volume, the series has surpassed 1 million copies in print.

Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi is 19th on the list at 35,164 copies sold in its first 4 days, 14.76% less than Volume 3 which sold 41,251 copies in its first 4 days as well. Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi is worked on by the same author of Ansatsu Kyoushitsu, Yuusei Matsui which is being serialized in the Weekly Shounen Jump by Shueisha. You can obtain more information about the title right here via its official web page and read its first chapter for free in Japanese right here. The work can also be found on Manga Plus in four different languages. As of its 6th volume, printed circulation has passed 1 million copies according to its official Twitter account.

Finally, we have Witch Watch at Number 23 with its 7th volume at 28,983 copies sold in its first 4 days, 38.95% more than Volume 3’s 20,859 copies in its first 4 days. The latest volume also performs much better than Volume 5’s 29,218 copies sold in its first 7 days. Witch Watch is serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shounen Jump magazine and is worked on by the author of SKET Dance, Kenta Shinohara. More information about the work can be obtained via its official web page right here in Japanese and its first chapter is also available through the same page of which you read it here in Japanese. Of course, Manga Plus also has its chapters in two different languages, English and Spanish for you to give them a read. Well, it does not come as a surprise that One Piece would lead the series sales charts thanks to strong performances of its related Manga works that saw the 103rd volume taking the Number 1 spot on the Manga sales chart among the others. Manga is its biggest contributor of sales for the week, though sales of its Video, Music, Books and Novels were also considered, and as a result, the series has produced 767.52 million yen (≈5.75 million USD) worth of sales. Jujutsu Kaisen which is placed 2nd is in the same boat as One Piece with strong sales of its Manga releases, particularly its latest and 20th volume, plus sales of its Video, Music, Books and Novels products have allowed it to collect 566.82 million yen (≈4.45 million USD) in revenue while the Yukionna to Kani wo Kuu series’ live-action adaptation (of the Manga) sees its single, Hoshi no Ame made a strong and impactful first 5 days to net 291,727 copies sold, bringing total sales from its Music products alone to 467.82 million yen (≈3.51 million USD).
