Japan Top Weekly Manga Ranking: November 1, 2021 ~ November 7, 2021

Let’s start off by addressing the low performance of Manga since the past couple of weeks including the one down below for the week between November 1 to November 7. As far as it goes, there has been no indication of any paper shortages or supply chain issues pertaining to Manga in Japan thus far. Checking several websites such as Amazon, CDJapan, Honto etc., most titles you see below are still fully stocked. One of the hints we have is the contraction of consumer or household spending in Japan starting August 2021 where it shrank to as low as 3% (Source: Reuters). However, upon checking the August sales chart for Manga, copies sold seemed rather stable with some ups and downs. The month of August started out strong with Boku no Hero Academia Volume 31 managing 378,661 copies sold in its first 5 days while the lowest on the chart at Number 30 belongs to Tokyo Revengers‘ Volume 20 at 48,708 copies sold. Sales did get progressively weaker as we reached the end of August with Tokyo Revengers dominating the lower half of the chart, its lowest being Volume 1’s 30,862 copies sold. According to Trading Economics, consumer spending was low for July 2020, however not for Manga mostly thanks to Kimetsu no Yaiba. And like August 2021, sales slowed down as they reached the end of July 2020. That said, nothing as bad as the past few weeks. Something else is at play here with consumers’ sentiment to be most likely the cause.

Spy x Family, I predicted should see a stronger outcome based on its latest trend and that it is set to have its Anime adaptation in 2022. With the announcement coming in right before the sales of Volume 8, a knee jerk reaction was expected to push sales to meet closer or above the sales of Volume 6 seeing Volume 7 could sell 498,984 copies within its first 3 days. Despite sales of its Limited Edition which comes in 7th at 40,541 copies sold, its total for Volume 8 in its first 4 days were only at 395,495 copies, which is still a very good number, yet far lower than Volume 7. The performance is surprisingly a lot closer to Volume 5 which at the time of its release witnessed 357,318 copies sold in 3 days back in early September 2021. It is too early to suggest that the series is on a decline, we may have to wait a couple more of its newer volumes to be released. And if indeed consumer buying habit is at play here, once it recovers (which it is expected to), we should see positive results for its future volumes.

It is thanks to the wonderful folks over at Oricon that we get to see these charts on a weekly basis, so be sure to head over to their website here and show them lots of love! Plus, all the data you find below is accessible via Oricon right here (Manga) and here (Series). Note that I have left all the links to their respective Google charts right at the bottom of the post. I have also covered quite extensively some of the titles below in my previous TSUTAYA and COMIC ZIN’s charts post, so be sure to head over and give it a read!

Dr. Stone which trails Spy x Family closely with its 23rd volume remains relatively stable with copies sold falling within expectation at 107,101 copies. This is slightly better than sales of Volume 21 which in its first 3 days managed to see 106,819 copies sold. Nevertheless, it is markedly better than Volume 11, Volume 12 and Volume 14 which had 4 days, 5 days and 6 days of sales when charted.

Fujimoto Tatsuki Tanpenshuu: 22 – 26 comes in at 4th place with 45,894 copies sold, lower than 17 – 21 which was released back between October 4 to October 10 due to its shorter days of sales of 4 days as opposed to 17 – 21’s 7 days of sales. At Number 5 is Kemono Jihen Vol. 15 at 45,662 copies sold which is quite consistent with the performance of its past volumes. Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi Volume 3 which comes in 6th sells 41,251 copies in its first 4 days, exhibiting a similar performance to Volume 1 and Volume 2 which sold 32,073 copies in July 2021 in its first 3 days and 53,483 copies in August 2021 in its first 5 days. The sequel to The Fable, The Second Contact’s 1st volume places 9th at 32,620 copies sold in its first 3 days while the 3rd volume of Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken – Yuusha Avan to Gokuen no Maou is 10th at 30,069 copies within its first 4 days.
