A rather slow week amid the lack of new and major releases between June 27 and July 3. The chart is mostly dominated by older volumes with a rise noted for the Spy x Family series, a knee-jerk reaction caused by the end of its Anime’s first cour broadcast. All volumes are accounted for with a total of 279,672 copies sold combined (not including the Volumes 1 to 3 set).
Leading the new releases for the week is Number 3’s Chi.: Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite Volume 8 with its best performance to date. The 59,806 copies sold for its latest volume is a direct improvement of 49.19% over Volume 5 which has the same number of days of sales when it debuted back in September 2021. Other volumes in the graph you see below actually debuted at a longer day of sales, but saw fewer copies sold than Volume 8. For instance, Volumes 4 and 7 were at 5 days while Volume 6 was at 6 days of sales. Note that Volume 8 is its final volume. Chi.: Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite is an award-winning series that was serialized between September 2020 and April 2022 in the Big Comic Spirits magazine by Shogakukan. The title has surpassed 2.5 million copies in print as of June 30 this year with more information about it can be accessed via its official webpage right here. You can also give its first chapter a try in Japanese here through the same page. The work by Uoto won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prizes for the year 2022 (Source: ANN) and was placed 2nd on both the 14th Manga Taisho Awards and Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2022 ranking last year (Source: ANN, ANN). It is also set to receive an Anime adaptation by studio Madhouse on an unannounced date (Source: ANN). Recently, it was featured in the music video by Japanese rock band, amazarashi of which you can watch below (note that the video has been viewed 338,742 times as of the time of writing since its upload).
Blue Giant Explorer is 5th on the list at 49,128 copies sold in its first 4 days which is less impactful than the 5-day sales performance of Volume 3 at 63,021 copies sold, but it may have been able to surpass Volume 5’s performance had it gone on sale a few days longer. Blue Giant Explorer serves as a sequel to Shinichi Ishizuka’s Blue Giant Supreme series that was serialized in the Big Comic magazine between September 2016 and April 2020. The sequel title is also serialized in the same magazine where it was initially released on May 25 the same year the prequel ended. For more information about the work, you can peruse its official webpage right here and of course check out its first chapter for free in Japanese via the same page here. The series (including its prequels) have now hit 8.4 million copies in circulation as of its 6th volume (Source: here) and in 2020, it received a Special Movie by Universal Music Japan, appearing alongside the Brooks Brothers of which you can watch below.
