Japan Top Weekly Manga Ranking: August 16, 2021 ~ August 22, 2021

Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen Volume 23 nearly beats its best debut sales amongst its latest nine volumes at it settles for the second best opening at 153,363 copies sold, up 4.42% from Volume 22’s 146,590 copies sold in its first week. Sales have been consistently above 100,000 copies sold with some ups and downs, but a correction tends to ensue to the following week.

Aka Akasaka’s other work in partnership with artist, Mengo Yokoyari, Oshi no Ko Volume 5 is also on the Top 10, placing 5th for the week to see 95,164 copies, below my expectation as I thought it would go above the 100,000 level. Nevertheless, this is still a great amount. The title was also recently announced to have won the “Next Manga Awards 2021” for the Print Manga category. As such, it still has the possibility to see a rise in future sales due to recognition which may serve to boost its domestic performance. Note that the copies sold this time around is slightly better than Volume 4, which at the time of its release recorded 94,157 copies sold in May of 2021.

It is thanks to the wonderful folks over at Oricon that we get to see these charts on a weekly basis, so be sure to head over to their site here and show them lots of love! Plus, all the data you find below is accessible via Oricon right here (Manga) and here (Series). In addition, I have made some analyses for most of the titles you see below in my previous TSUTAYA and COMIC ZIN post right here, so do check it out!

Though a surprising and impactful entry would be Uma Musume Cinderella Gray Volume 4 that comes in 2nd for the week. The 148,572 copies it has sold is significantly better than sales of Volume 3 back in May 2021, which then sold 93,287 copies, a 37.21% increase debut-to-debut. Things however, do not look so well for Black Lagoon‘s Volume 12 which records its worst debut sales amongst its latest four volumes at 118,152 copies. That said, it may see a correction the following week, so do keep a lookout.

Blue Lock Volume 15 which places 4th for the week experiences a modest climb debut-to-debut from sales of Volume 14 back in May 2021. Sales pushes upward by 16.43% from Volume 14’s 79,726 copies to 95,396 copies sold. Diamond no Ace Act II Volume 28 sees a massive jump in sales from Volume 27 in its first week, from 55,903 copies sold to 91,128 copies. However, do not let debut sales of Volume 26 and Volume 27 fool you as the two reported good sales on Week 2. With a great start, do expect sales to slow considerably for the title the following week.

At Number 7 is Enen no Shouboutai Volume 30 which too records better debut-to-debut sales than its last. Volume 29 sold 73,420 copies in its release week, and that number has gone up 14.51% for Volume 30. Yet, this is nowhere near the levels shown by Volume 26 and Volume 27 which sold 91,486 copies and 94,758 copies respectively in their first weeks. The volume may still be able to rank the following week on the Top 30 as long as competition is not as stiff.

Akatsuki no Yona Volume 36 at Number 8 sees 78,241 copies sold, down debut-to-debut from the highs of Volume 35, which in its first week sold 104,548 copies. The better outcome for Volume 35 is partly attributable to the release of its Special Edition, and number of copies sold for Volume 36 falls within expectation, and that its performance would be closer to that of Volume 32 and Volume 33. A spot below is Kanojo, Okarishimasu Volume 22 at 74,930 copies sold, a minute increase over Volume 21’s 66,319 copies sold, but is slightly farther away from its best debut sales which belongs to Volume 18 at 85,768 copies.
