Japan Top Weekly Anime Blu-ray and DVD Ranking: September 27, 2021 ~ October 3, 2021

Anime Blu-ray and DVD chart between September 27 to October 3 presents a dominating Bandai Namco Entertainment which products it is distributing in the local market placing five out of ten of the titles listed in the Top 10. The list is led by one of its popular title, Love Live! Superstar!! Volume 1 at 14,514 copies sold for the week. However, this is fewer than the copies sold that Love Live! Nijigasaki Gakuen School Idol Doukoukai had back in December of 2020, which at the time sold 22,345 copies in its first 4 days. Note that Superstar!! Volume 1 has 6 days of sales.

At Number 2 is a fellow Anime idol series, IDOLiSH7: Third Beat! Volume 1 at 6,024 copies sold in its first 6 days of sales. Like Superstar!!, it too witnesses a lower number of copies sold when compared to Second Beat’s Volume 1 performance the previous year which was at solid 8,592 copies sold in its first 4 days.

It is thanks to the wonderful people over at Oricon that we get to see these charts on a weekly basis, so be sure to head over to their site here and show them lots of love! Plus, all the data you find below is accessible via Oricon right here (Blu-ray) and here (DVD).

Next, at Number 3 is the direct sequel to the 2017 Anime series, Princess Principal: Crown Handler Movie 1 which was released in theatre nationwide Japan on February the 11th this year. It settles in at a good 5,899 copies sold. If you missed out on the title, you can check out its promotional video down below!

A spot below is Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken 2nd Season Volume 3 at 3,980 copies sold, a 6.16% improvement over Volume 2‘s 3,735 copies, however note that Volume 3 has 1 day of sales more than Volume 2. Volume 1 unfortunately could not rank back in March amid strong competition at the time, yet it should have had around the same amount of copies sold. Its Volume 5 DVD is also charted, placing 5th on the DVD chart at 499 copies sold.

Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song Volume 4 which comes in 5th for the week noted its best performer ever in its first 5 days of sales as copies sold are up 1.65% debut-to-debut from Volume 3’s 3,646 copies sold to 3,707 copies. This is its best performance since Volume 1. The title is expecting two more volumes to be released in October and November respectively, and its increasing trajectory may suggest that copies sold would most likely climb for its subsequent volumes in their debut weeks. Thankfully, Volume 4’s DVD too can be found on the DVD chart at Number 6. The 436 copies sold it has allows Volume 4 sales to push past through 4,000 copies sold.

RWBY‘s Volume 6 claims the 7th place at 2,501 copies sold, and its final volume is set for an October release while Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei Volume 1 is 8th at 2,187 copies sold. Note that this is nowhere near the number of copies sold Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei: Raihousha-hen Volume 1 had back in December 2020, which it then sold 5,599 copies in its first 5 days.

Hige wo Soru. Soshite Joshikousei wo Hirou. closes its Blu-ray run with the final volume of the series recording its best 5-day sales ever at 1,987 copies sold! This is a 1.11% improvement over Volume 2’s 1,965 copies which is now its 2nd best seller. At Number 10 is World Trigger 2nd Season Volume 2 which sees better copies sold over Volume 1’s 1,817 copies back in August.

Finally, if you look at the list closely, I have placed a new indicator which is the price for each volume including its tax to give a better idea of its general performance. Note that, the higher the price would also mean more content in the package or more episodes, therefore it does not answer its actual performance, where “profit” would serve the best indicator to really say whether if it indeed did well or not. Anyway, I have made the following estimation for its revenue as shown below (average price x number of units sold), so do have a look!

  1. Was 86 sales better than Vol. 2 or it went worst? In DVD charts it has a better place compared to previous releases so I was wondering if we would have saw it in for example 12 or 13th place in bd chart perhaps if chart continued.

  2. I see, I have high hope for it’s Volume 5 onward since these are for it’s part 2( season 2) and also interesting numbers for Vivy. most interesting.

    1. True! Seeing them increasing, perhaps more people watched the shows and thought they are interested enough to buy the Blu-rays. I hope 86 will see a similar outcome.
