Japan Top Weekly Anime Blu-ray and DVD Ranking: July 26, 2021 ~ August 1, 2021

The chart for the week opens with a rather surprise face. Shin-Ei Animation‘s Pui Pui Molcar has a great start as it sees 24,106 worth of copies sold for its Blu-ray. Its DVD counterpart too performs really well in its own respective chart claiming the 1st spot as it records 8,188 copies sold there. Together, both Blu-ray and DVD copies sold stand at a great 32,294 copies. If you are interested to see what the show is all about, do check out the promotional video down below:

It is thanks to the wonderful folks over at Oricon that we get to see these charts on a weekly basis, so be sure to head over to their site here and show them lots of love! All of the data you find below is accessible via Oricon right here (Blu-ray) and here (DVD).

Others on the list are familiar faces. New releases start with the 2nd volume of Zombieland Saga: Revenge which places 3rd with 6,261 copies sold for the week, down 9.59% debut-to-debut over Volume 1. Yuru Camp△ Season 2 follows right after, but could not repeat the sales of its 2nd volume which debuted at 6,751 copies sold back in May. The 3rd volume for the series has to content with 5,010 copies sold, the lowest it has so far amongst its three latest volume.

Coming in at Number 5 is SK∞‘s 5th volume. It sees 4,651 copies sold for its Blu-rays while its DVDs has a decent turnout of 1,543 copies sold. In total, the 5th volume has sold 6,194 copies for the week. Unfortunately, this is by far its lowest debut sales amongst its latest five volumes. Sales peaked with the release of its 2nd volume which sold 6,942 copies in its first week, and it has ever since been recording fewer debut sales for its subsequent volumes.

Volume 8 marks a 4.73% improvement over its last as it sees 4,335 copies sold for the week. This is still slightly weaker than Volume 1 in its debut week. However, its DVD sales continue to disappoint as it could not see numbers go above 600 copies to make onto Oricon Top 20 DVD sales chart.

Kimetsu no Yaiba Movie: Mugen Ressha-hen at the 7th spot continues to slow down as it reports another week of fewer copies sold than the week before. Both Regular Editions of its Blu-rays and DVDs has sold 9,971 copies for the week. Nevertheless, as tracked by this Blog, lifetime sales for its Regular Edition are now at 1,038,135 copies. 1. Wow, I heard that 86 Vol. 1 didn’t sold too well but man it’s not even in the bluray chart and 18th in DVD???I had high hopes that it’s going to sell well so we can see many seasons in the future but now … I guess we have to see how future volumes will do. I’m wondering where in the Bluray list it is Since you can’t use the full ORICON list for copyright purposes.

    1. Hi! Yes… It is quite unfortunate indeed. I too thought it would sell well. But, I can reassure you that Blu-ray and DVD sales may not be the only indicators to a potential sequel. For instance, Fruits Basket is not / did not do well on the charts (sales are under 1,500) and yet it receives sequel up to the end. It really depends and it is really hard to gauge what publishers and producers are thinking. Though, I still think that it can be quite discouraging to see such low sales. I hope for the best.

As for the full Oricon list we would have to subscribe to the individual platform. I have a blog post here to guide anyone interested:
      https://erzat.blog/registering-for-oricons-yuutaiju-personal-account/

For a more complete list, we would have subscribe to Oricon Business (Anime charts alone around $1,500 per month based on conversion but we could see up to Top 50 if I am not mistaken).

  2. Pui Pui Molcar en primer lugar jajaja. Por cierto no sabía que 86 tuvo unas pésimas ventas pensé que vendería bien xD

    1. Me too, I expected it to sell well. Maybe the reception is not as good in Japan than what I had thought. But again, this is just disc sales. We have to consider sales of other related products such as its merchandise (figurines), soundtrack, Light Novel etc.

    1. Hi! I would say it varies depending on the titles, but quite typical. Many titles seem to have stronger Volume 1 sales on their debut weeks, and they tend to fall slightly (around the 5% to 10% range on volume 2). Some do record the opposite, rising around 5 – 10% for Volume 2.
