Japan Top 16 Weekly Light Novel Sales Ranking: August 22 – August 28, 2022

Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume no Tojimari tops the Light Novel sales chart at 27,130 copies sold in its first 5 days. It adapts Makoto Shinkai’s upcoming film of the same name that is slated for release on November 11 this year. Tantei wa Mou, Shindeiru. has its 7th volume debuted at 16,938 copies sold in its first 4 days, 16.09% lower than Volume 6, but it is 65.49% higher than Volume 3’s 10,235 copies. Despite the drop from Volume 6, the latest volume still performs better than Volume 5’s 15,908 copies in its first 6 days and is significantly stronger than Volume 1’s 6,608 copies sold in its first 7 days. Tantei wa Mou, Shindeiru. began its publication in November of 2019 and was later adapted into a Manga series in May 2020. In January 2021, it received a sequel Manga title The Lost Memory. Note that both of its Manga are serialized in Comic Alive while its Light Novel is published under KADOKAWA’s MF Bunko J label. According to a Tweet by the author Nigojuu, the series has passed 1 million copies in print. In July 2021, it received a 12-episode TV Anime series adaptation by studio ENGI (KADOKAWA owns it by 53%) and a sequel is planned for broadcast on an unannounced date. KADOKAWA also recently released a short commercial to promote the work further of which you can watch below.

Oni no Hanayome Shinkon-hen: Aratana Deai is placed 3rd on the list at 15,461 copies sold in just one day. The latest work is the 6th instalment of the Oni no Hanayome series which was initially published back in October 2020. A Manga adaptation of the title is also available and is serialized in noicomi with its first chapter available for reading right here. According to its official web page, the series now has more than 500,000 copies in circulation. To celebrate the milestone it achieved, a video was published by Starts Publishing of which you can watch below.

Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu finds its 18th volume with a much stronger start than Volume 16 by 9.89% as it claims the 4th spot at 12,141 copies sold. The latest performance also edges out Volume 17’s performance which saw 9,965 copies sold in its first 6 days. Before that, it was seen with Volume 15 at 8,028 copies sold in its first 3 days. Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu was first published in May 2013 with a Manga adaptation greenlit in June 2015 and is serialized in  AlphaPolis Web Manga. With more than 2.9 million copies in circulation (according to its latest cover), more information about the work can be found on its official Light Novel page here (plus its chapters). As for its Manga adaptation, you can read its first three chapters for free in Japanese right here. In July 2021, studio C2C adapted it into a 12-episode TV Anime series with a sequel currently in the works.

Then, we have Hachi-nan tte, Sore wa Nai deshou! Volume 26 at Number 7 with 8,728 copies sold in its first 4 days, not as good as Volume 24’s 8,289 copies in its first 3 days back in December last year. Hachi-nan tte, Sore wa Nai deshou! was first published in April 2014 under the KADOKAWA’s MF Books label and was adapted into a Manga series by artist Hiroki Kusumoto in April 2015. Some of its Manga chapters can be read for free in Japanese via Comic Walker right here in Japanese. In April 2020, it received a 12-episode TV Anime series adaptation by studios SynergySP and Shin-Ei Animation that ended its broadcast in June the same year.

Then, Haunted Campus makes its latest volume debut titled “Oshirasama no Sato” at Number 8 at 8,192 copies sold in its first 5 days, nearly identical to its prior volume’s performance of 8,937 copies sold in its first 6 days in December last year. Haunted Campus was first published in October 2012 and has had more than 1.5 million copies since its debut in print according to its latest volume cover. In 2014, the work was adapted into a Manga series that unfortunately lasted only twelve chapters. You can check out some of its chapters available here for free in Japanese via Comic Walker. Gimai Seikatsu Volume 6 is 9th on the list with 7,562 copies sold in its first 4 days which is a tad bit better than Volume 2’s 7,529 copies by 0.44%. The volume’s performance is also a lot stronger than the 7-day sales produced by its 1st volume, but seems somewhat flat when compared to the rest. Gimai Seikatsu is a fairly new series that first appeared in January 2021 with a Manga adaptation available in Shounen Ace Plus. According to a Tweet from its official Twitter account, the series has more than 300,000 copies in print as of its 6th volume. The work will be adapted into a TV Anime series, though information about the adaptation is still very scarce. A spot below at Number 10 is Hitoribocchi no Isekai Kouryaku Volume 10 at 6,854 copies sold in its first 4 days, not as good as Volume 9’s 6,721 copies sold back in March this year. Hitoribocchi no Isekai Kouryaku has been publishing since January 2018 with a Manga adaptation available that is serialized in Comic Gardo and is a series with more than 1.9 million copies in print including digital according to its Manga’s 13th volume product page. Skip three spots below and Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei Volume 3 makes its presence known at 5,842 copies sold in its first 4 days. The Light Novel was last seen with its 2nd volume at 4,970 copies sold back in February in its first 3 days. Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei first began as a web novel on May 15, 2020 before its first official publication began in September 2021. However, prior to its 1st volume release, it was adapted into a Manga series first that is still being serialized in Comic Gardo. The final new release here is Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki at Number 14 with its 26th volume at 5,613 copies sold which is 65.82% higher than Volume 25’s 3,385 copies in its first 7 days. Before that, it was seen with Volume 24 at 3,889 copies in just 3 days. Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki was first published in January 2014 and was soon adapted into a Manga series the same year in June.   1. Not surprised to see Makoto Shinkai’s new novel at the top!
    Gimai seikatsu is also doing good. I have read fan tl of Volume 6 and it’s quite good
    As for Tanmoshi, this volume marks the beginning of the second arc. I am honestly kinda disappointed with the route nigozyu-sensei is taking but it seems like the overall reception of this volume is good since it performed better than Volume 5 which imo is one of the best volumes of the series. I am looking forward to it!
