Japan Top 10 Weekly Light Novel Ranking: August 2, 2021 ~ August 8, 2021

Now, before we dive into the list, and before anyone says, “Yo, why your list so different ma man?”, allow me to explain briefly what has been going on. For some reasons I am not cognisant of, Oricon has not listed some of the titles you see below on the “Light Novel Ranking” chart available here. To get some of these missing titles, I had to go over to other charts such as the Bunko ranking and Bungei-sho ranking. I have double checked with other databases and stores to make sure that some of these titles are indeed Light Novels. The concern is that I may have left out others… in my two years worth of weekly sales ranking posts. Anyway, I will discuss the matter in more detail on a different post. Plus, don’t forget to visit Oricon by visiting their site here as these weekly charts are all thanks to them!

Leading the chart for the week between August 2 to August 8 is Kyoto Teramachi Sanjou no Holmes Volume 17, a work by Mai Mochizuki. The title actually received an Anime adaptation three years ago done by studio Seven. You can check out the promotional video of the Anime down below in case you have missed out on the title. J-Novel Club currently has six of its volumes up for grabs, so be sure to have a look at them right here!

Other new releases on the week’s chart include the adaptation of the latest Boku no Hero Academia film “World Heroes’ Mission“. It comes in at 5th place at 6,327 copies sold. Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha Volume 10 follows closely behind with 5,159 copies for the week, a fall of 35.81% debut-to-debut over Volume 9’s 8,037 copies sold. The series received an Anime adaptation by SILVER LINK. in summer of last year, and sequels were announced, though broadcasting dates are still unknown (Source: ANN). Like the first season, SILVER LINK. will be once again be responsible for the Anime adaptation.

Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku Extra Volume 2 places 7th for the week with 5,110 copies sold while Itai no wa Iya nanode Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. (or BOFURI) Volume 12 settles for the 8th spot at 5,070 copies sold. BOFURI was adapted into Anime back in Winter 2020, like Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha, it was a project by studio SILVER LINK. A sequel is confirmed to take place on an unannounced date, but it will air some time in 2022 (Source: ANN). Do check out its Season 2 announcement down below:

Two other new titles can be found at Number 9 with Isekai ni Teni shitara Yama no Naka datta. Handou de Tsuyosa yori mo Kaitekisa wo Erabimashita. Volume 5 seeing a modest 21.68% increase in sales over debut sales of Volume 4. Tanaka-ke, Tensei suru. Volume 3 settles for the 13th place at 4,353 copies sold. The title also has an ongoing Manga adaptation published under the same name through Dengeki Maoh. You can check out the preview of chapter 1 available here (in Japanese) if you are interested.

As for past releases, Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon Volume 5 is still going strong despite the downtrend. Volume 5’s one month sales are now at a whopping 125,458 copies sold! Likewise, Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime is not letting up of its sales. The title is now on its 8th week on the chart with copies sold breaching 80,000 copies sold in Japan. Another of its version which comes with illustration can be found at number 12, slipping 21.38% week-on-week to 4,386 copies sold.

Kimetsu no Yaiba Novelize: Yuukaku Senyuu Daisakusen-hen is at 10th place as sales drop 24.36% week-on-week ending the week at 4,601 copies sold.

  1. “Tokidoki Bosotto Roshiago de Dereru Tonari no Alya-san está aprovechando el efecto Virtual Youtuber”¿Oh? Está recibiendo promoción de algún “Youtuber virtual”?. Boku no Hero Academia con novela eh, creo todos los mangas de shūeisha que obtienen película también obtienen novelización

    1. Yes! Apparently this was made known to me through Twitter. One use pointed out that it has been getting a lot of attention through Virtual Youtube. A good example is this one here:

And you are right. Pretty much every big titles from Shueisha that has a movie adaptation get a novel 😅
