Japan Top 10 Weekly Anime Blu-ray and DVD Sales Ranking: June 12 – June 18, 2023

There have been some changes to the reporting style here on the Blog. Please refer to the post here for further information.

It is thanks to the wonderful people over at Oricon that we get to see these charts on a weekly basis, so be sure to head over to their site here and show them lots of love! Plus, all the data you find below is accessible via Oricon right here (Blu-ray) and here (DVD). To access the sales data, be sure to click on the “Analytics” accordion and then click “Chart”. This should bring you to the Google chart page that contains the latest available sales data.

Please note that Oricon’s daily surveys do not cover all stores in Japan, and some data may be missing from the list provided below. To view the list of stores that participate in Oricon’s surveys, please refer to the link provided (or the post here). If you would like to learn more about Oricon and their tracking methods, you may find additional information here. While I have manually counted the number of stores included in the list below, please be aware that there may be some errors, and not all stores are listed on official websites as many are exclusive sets listed to certain retailers. Therefore, it’s important to keep in mind that the number of stores counted may not fully reflect all retailers that sell the product.

The cutoff point on the Blu-ray general chart for the week was 439 copies, whereas on the DVD general chart, it was 358 copies. Therefore, any releases denoted with “N/A” have sold less than the amount stated. Overall, the release of One Piece Film: Red‘s discs has strongly reinvigorated the overall sales of Anime discs compared to last week’s performance.

The following week (from June 19 to June 25) will likely see another strong showing, as Kimetsu no Yaiba: Katanakaji no Sato-hen and Oniichan wa Oshimai! among others, will be making their newest volume debuts.

Without further ado, below are the Top 10 and Top 20 Anime Blu-rays and DVDs for the week:

Analysis

One Piece has bounced back strongly with the emergence of its One Piece Film: Red‘s discs after achieving record lows for its past two films. According to Oricon, both films Gold and Stampede sold 52,913 copies and 60,128 copies, respectively, in their first five days of release. This puts One Piece Film: Red ahead by 72.84% and 52.10% in terms of copies sold, respectively, compared to the two films. However, One Piece Film: Red is still 60.07% below Strong World and 25.97% below Z in terms of copies sold. What is more impressive is that the latter two films made their debuts with 229,059 copies and 123,540 copies sold in just three days, respectively.

In terms of revenue, the 33,258 copies sold for the Blu-ray’s Deluxe Limited Edition have certainly provided a massive advantage to the film’s release, considering its price of 12,300 yen (≈87 USD), which makes it the priciest non-store exclusive release. The revenue for the package alone amounts to a stellar 409,073,400 yen (≈2.88 million USD). In total, the revenue for all editions combined (as tracked by Oricon) amounts to 717,915,600 yen (≈5.06 million USD), which is 111.65% and 83.57% more than Gold and Stampede, respectively. However, the lower number of copies sold puts One Piece Film: Red 50.12% and 7.19% below Strong World and Z in terms of revenue. Considering the slowdown in disc sales over the past years, the small decrease in revenue compared to Z indicates that One Piece Film: Red has actually performed really well.

Lastly, not to forget the Special Volume, which sold a total of 10,895 copies. The One Piece Film: Red-related releases for the week have a combined total of 102,352 copies sold, generating a revenue of 773,683,100 yen (≈5.45 million USD). This is a huge success.

Additional Comments

One Piece Film: Red is the most successful film in its franchise, with a box office revenue of 19.71 billion yen (≈138.86 million USD). It has become the 8th highest-grossing Japanese film to date, in terms of box office revenue, according to Kogyo Tsushinsha.
