A Slightly Rough Start for IG Port, but All Indicators are Positive for its Fiscal Year 2022 Quarter 1 Performance

This is a follow up report to the following articles: Great Pretender is IG Port’s Biggest Copyright Title Earner for the Fiscal Year Ending May 2021 and IG Port, Inc.’s Profit as a Group Soars, but Wit Studio, Inc. Suffers Massive Losses for Fiscal Year 2021.

Although operating income appears to be lower for two of its segments, the outcome is certainly better than Quarter 1’s performance of the year before for IG Port. Video Production Business noted a jump in operating income attributable to higher net sales from the loss it made for Fiscal Year 2021, to 9,935 thousand yen (~87 thousand USD). The report however, mentioned that some productions are in the red as a result of its emphasis on quality, but assured that thanks to the management of production budgets and negotiation, operating income has improved. Though it is still unknown what has become of Wit Studio after the massive loss it reported as of Fiscal Year 2021, and not much can be said until its next quarterly report is revealed. As for its studios’ actual performances, we will most likely have to wait until its full Fiscal Year result for 2022 is published next year. Nevertheless, to see the segment being in the positive is a fresh of breath air.

Could Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song have helped its Video Production Business to go on the green side? That is highly probable. Appetite for its videograms are healthy with its Blu-rays seeing a steady 3,000 copies sold on their release weeks. It has in fact noted consistent climb for every new volume according to Oricon charts with its latest, Volume 4 bringing in 3,707 copies sold in its first 5 days, its highest since Volume 1. While sales of Blu-rays alone may not determine the overall health of its business, it may point out to possibilities of strong demands through its other streams such as TV.

Its Publishing Business is off to a good start with record sales made since Quarter 1 of Fiscal Year 2012 at 629,124 thousand yen (~5.5 million yen), pushing operating income to also meet its best at 172,490 thousand yen (~1.5 million USD). This business, which is ran through its subsidiaries: Mag Garden Corporation and Lingua Franca (Web Manga), have noted strong sales through titles such as: Reincarnation no Kaben and Meikyuu Black Company. Sales to bookstores noticed a slight increase year-on-year whereas e-book sales continued to be strong, mainly supported by titles centred around genres such as Isekai Tensei and Narou-kei.

On to its Copyright Business, sales have fallen from 548,367 thousand yen (~4.8 million USD) from the same period the year before to 456,260 thousand yen (~4 million USD), and a significant drop of 93.53% for its operating income from 145,536 thousand yen (~1.3 million USD) to 9,412 thousand yen (~82 thousand USD). In this segment, the company received revenue from copyrighted titles such as: Kaizoku Oujo, Shingeki no Kyojin, Haikyuu!!, Psycho-Pass and many more. However, it was not disclosed as to why the massive drop of operating income had occur.

As a result, the Group as a whole recorded net sales worth 2,293,229 thousand yen (~20.1 million USD), and a net income of 131,940 thousand yen (~1.2 million USD) for the quarter.

IG Port, Inc. is incorporated in Japan with its head office in Musashino​-shi. It is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under ticket symbol: 3791. Production I.G., SIGNAL.MD, and Mag Garden are wholly owned subsidiaries, while it owns WIT STUDIO and Lingua Franca by 66.7% and 50% respectively.
